Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

June 12, 2005 - The Cedar Rapids Kernels, in conjunction with their parent club the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, announced today that catcher Michael Collins has been placed on the 7-day disabled list. With just one active catcher on the roster after the move, the Angels have promoted Brett Martinez from extended spring training to provide depth behind the plate.

Collins, the team's second leading hitter with a .316 average, was placed on the DL after being hit by two pitches in the Kernels' 7-4 loss at Wisconsin on Thursday. Only All-Star outfielder Aaron Peel has been hitting at a better clip than the Australian receiver.

Martinez joins the Kernels after opening the season with Triple-A Salt Lake. A 24th round selection of the Angels in the 2002 draft, Martinez began the year with the Stingers but played in just four games before being reassigned to Mesa. The Redlands, CA, native appeared in one game with the Kernels during the 2004 season, going 1-for-2 against West Michigan on September 4th.

The Kernels roster stands at 25 active players today as they close out a four-game series with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in Appleton, WI, at 1:05 p.m. Cedar Rapids returns to Veterans Memorial Stadium on Monday for a seven-game home stand with Burlington and Clinton that will conclude the first half of the Midwest League season.
