Swing rally early in win

June 12, 2005 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Swing of the Quad Cities ended a series of frustration with a victory on Sunday afternoon as they exploded for five first-inning runs on their way to a 10-4 win over the South Bend Silver Hawks at John O'Donnell Stadium. The Silver Hawks had won the first three games of the series, but Matt Lemanczyk had four hits in the win for the Swing and Brandon Yarbrough, Matt Shepherd and Eric Verbryke each had two RBI as the Swing moved within two games of first place in the MWL-West.

Quad Cities remains in third place in the division, but picked up one game on both Wisconsin and Clinton, who were losers on Sunday afternoon. The Swing take Monday off, while Clinton plays host to Wisconsin in the first game of a three-game series. Because the top two teams in each half make the playoffs, the Swing (33-30) will be 1 ½ games out of a playoff spot when they host Peoria on Tuesday. Quad Cities will play one fewer game than both Clinton and Wisconsin due to an early-season Swing rainout at Kane County.

Winning pitcher Mike Parisi (5-4) spotted the Silver Hawks (38-25) to a 2-0 first-inning lead, but the Swing rallied with two outs to take the lead. Lemanczyk singled, stole a base and scored on a single from Juan Lucena, who now has a six-game hitting streak. After Koley Kolberg struck out two straight men, Mike Ferris drew a walk to start the two-out rally. Hoffpauir singled into center to score Lucena for a 2-2 tie, and then Yarbrough's base hit into right plated Ferris. With two outs, Shepherd hit a single into center to score both Hoffpauir and Yarbrough, giving the Swing a 5-2 lead.

The Hawks got one run back in the top of the second, but Quad Cities put it away with five more runs in the bottom of the third inning. A Ferris walk and a Hoffpauir single started the rally, and then Yarbrough doubled to the wall in center to bring home a hustling Ferris. Simon Williams drew a walk to load the bases, and then Lemanczyk's flare single to right – his third hit of the game – drove home Hoffpauir to chase Kolberg from the game.

With two outs, Eric Verbryke came to the plate to faced new pitcher Hipolito Guerrero, and singled the first pitch he saw into right field to score Yarbrough. Williams, trying to score on a close play from second, barreled over catcher Wilkin Castillo to score the second run of the play, and then Lemanczyk scampered home when the collision led to the ball heading to the backstop. When the dust cleared, the Swing held a 10-3 lead on their way to a comfortable victory.

Parisi picked up his fourth straight victory for the Swing, allowing four runs on nine hits through five innings. While the performance was Parisi's least impressive in his last five starts, he joins Dennis Dove as the only Swing pitcher to win four straight starts this season. Although the Swing are currently stuck in a 6-12 slump since May 26, Parisi has picked up four wins during that time.

Kyle McClellan, activated from the disabled list before the game, worked four scoreless innings to pick up his first professional save. After allowing two singles in the sixth inning, McClellan did not allow a base hit over his final three frames of work.

UP NEXT: After an off day on Monday, the Swing and Peoria Chiefs play the first of six straight games to close out the first half on Tuesday night, when Quad Cities sends Donnie Smith (0-1, 6.08) to the mound against lefty Chris Shaver (2-5, 3.90) in a rematch of the Swing's win last Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00, and pregame coverage on WKBF AM-1270 will begin at 1:45.

PROMOTION: Tuesday will be the second of 15 Cubs-Cardinals rivalry games scheduled for John O'Donnell Stadium this season. The Swing will close out the homestand against Peoria on Wednesday, with a 97 Rock/Hooters Beverage night at the ballpark, featuring the live music of Jim the Mule beginning when the gates open at 6:00 p.m.
