Geneva, IL - Cody Rogers had three hits, including a home run, to help Braulio Lara and the Hot Rods (33-28) beat the Kane County Cougars (26-34) 6-4 on Thursday night. The victory gives the Hot Rods the series victory as they take two of three from the Cougars to begin this six-game road trip through the Western Division.
The teams traded runs between the second and third innings. Bowling Green loaded them up in the second, scoring a run on an RBI single from Kevin Kiermaier. An inning later an RBI groundout from Kane County's Ryan Stovall knotted the game at 1-1 after three innings.
Bowling Green re-took the lead in the fifth inning as Kiermaier reached to begin the frame on a bunt single. After a balk moved him to second, Luke Bailey brought him home on a base hit to right field. After a sacrifice by Robi Estrada and a single from Cody Rogers, Hector Guevara drilled a two-run double to left that pushed the Hot Rods lead to 4-1.
Kane County answered right back in the bottom of the frame against Lara, putting the first two men on with a hit and a walk. Two outs later Ryan Stovall smacked a two-run single to cut the Hot Rods lead to 4-3.
Lara left the game after five innings allowing three runs on five hits. The lefty walked two and struck out two to earn his second win of the year, his first since April 14.
After All-Star Eliazer Suero entered the game with a scoreless sixth inning, the Hot Rods added a run in the top of the seventh to make it 5-3. With one out, Rogers belted his fourth triple off the base of the right field wall. He scored two batters later on a two-out single from Nick Schwaner to give the Hot Rods a two-out cushion.
Kane County would eventually make it a one-run game in the bottom of the eighth against Suero, scoring consecutive doubles from Cheslor Cuthbert and Jake Kuebler. But Rogers answered back for the Hot Rods by blasting his team-best tenth home run in the top of the ninth to push the margin back to two runs at 6-4.
Suero worked three innings, allowing a run on three hits before turning the ball over to Chris Rearick, who closed down a scoreless ninth for his seventh save of the season.
Rogers three hits and three runs led the Hot Rods offense as they pounded out a dozen hits on the night. Rogers has now scored 48 runs on the season, most in the Midwest League. Kiermaier added three hits, scoring another run with a stolen base and an RBI. Guevara's two-run double extended his hitting streak to a team-high 12 games.
The Hot Rods head west now to continue this six game road trip against the Clinton LumberKings (Seattle Mariners) on Friday night. RHP George Jensen (4-2, 5.06) takes the ball in the opener against Clinton LHP James Paxton (2-2, 2.11). First pitch is at 7 PM CDT. You can listen to the game with Tom Gauthier beginning at 6:35 PM CDT on 1340 AM WBGN and www.bghotrods.com.
