South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
Burlington, IA - Behind the left arm of David Holmberg, the South Bend Silver Hawks avoided a sweep by shutting out the Burlington Bees 5-0 on Thursday night. The Hawks also keep pace with the rest of the Eastern Division, remaining two games out of a wild card spot with nine remaining in the first half.
Holmberg (WP, 6-3) won for the sixth time in his last seven starts, and he did it again by not allowing any runs. He threw 6.0 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and striking out six. For the second start in a row, Holmberg did not allow a walk and has stretched his scoreless innings streak to a team-high 21.0 straight. He has not allowed a run since the fourth inning on May 22 at Great Lakes.
Eury De La Rosa (ND) took over in the seventh and allowed just one hit in 2.0 innings, while Chris Odegaard (ND) pitched a scoreless ninth to close out the team's fifth shutout of the year.
Offensively, the Silver Hawks took advantage of some errors to score two unearned runs early against Jose Macias (LP, 1-1). Raywilly Gomez singled, stole second, moved to third on an error, and scored on another error in the second for the early 1-0 lead.
Then, in the third, Raul Navarro doubled and Ender Inciarte reached on an error. Zach Walters brought them both home with a double to left field to push the lead to 3-0.
Ramon Castillo rounded out the scoring in the sixth inning by blasting a two run homer to left-center against reliever Pedro Vidal (ND). The shot was Castillo's fourth of the season and increased his RBI total to 18.
Mike Freeman also had a hit for South Bend to extend his hitting streak to a team-high 12 games. Inciarte's streak came to a close at 11 games.
The Silver Hawks continue their nine game road trip with three in Peoria, Illinois against the Chiefs (Chicago Cubs) beginning on Friday night. First pitch is scheduled for 8:00 PM Eastern Time with RHP Jeff Shields (3-5, 6.29 ERA) going up against former Major Leaguer RHP Angel Guzman (0-0, 0.00 ERA), who is battling his way back from arm surgery over a year ago. Pregame coverage begins at 7:40 PM Eastern Time on www.sportsjuice.com and www.silverhawks.com.
