
Loons edge Kernels, 2-1 to take series

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - The Great Lakes Loons edged the Kernels 2-1 at Perfect Game Field on Thursday night. Both teams scored single runs in the 1st inning. Christian Lara reached on an error by Kernels second baseman Wes Hatton with one out in the 1st inning. He later scored on a RBI single by Joe Becker, giving the Loons a 1-0 lead.
The Kernels evened the score in the bottom of the 1st inning. Jesus Campos singled with one out and later scored on a RBI single by Ricky Alvarez, tying the game 1-1. The only other score of the game came in the 5th inning. Preston Mattingly gave the Loons a 2-1 lead in the 5th inning with a solo home run to left field. Max Russell (4-5) started and took the loss on the mound for the Kernels. He went 5.1 innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits while striking out two and walking four.
Zach Lee (4-1) started for Great Lakes and went five innings. He allowed one run on four hits while striking out five and walking two. Logan Bawcom picked up his sixth save for the Loons by pitching a scoreless and hitless 9th inning. Caleb Graham pitched 2.2 innings for Cedar Rapids. He allowed no runs on two hits while striking out three and walking one. Tyler Kehrer went one innings and allowed no runs on no hits while striking out two and walking one.
The Kernels out hit the Loons 5-4. Campos led the offense by going 2-4. Travis Witherspoon, Alvarez, and Wes Hatton each had one hit in the game.
The Kernels begin a three game series with the Lansing Lugnuts on Friday night beginning at 6:35 p.m. The Kernels encourage all fans to wear pink as part of Pink in the Park Night, sponsored by the Mary Kay Foundation. The Kernels will wear special pink jerseys that will be sold via a silent auction during the game with the proceeds to benefit the Mary Kay Foundation. It is also Fritos Family Friday. Fans will be randomly chosen to take part in special ballpark activities, like throwing out a first pitch or being on the radio with Kernels radio broadcaster Morgan Hawk. Every Friday home game is 98.1 KHAK Two for One Beer Friday. You can buy one 16 oz. draft beer at the regular price and get one free.
