Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
NEW BRITAIN, CT - The New Britain Rock Cats tagged Hansel Robles for eight runs, including five in the first inning, and handed the Binghamton Mets a 9-6 loss on Tuesday night at New Britain Stadium. Dustin Lawley launched two home runs in the defeat which snapped Binghamton's four-game winning streak.
The attack started early against Robles. Eddie Rosario, the second hitter of the first inning, put the Rock Cats on the board with a solo home run. The drive was the first of five straight hits for New Britain. Following a pair of singles, Aaron Hicks bounced an RBI singles past Jayce Boyd at first base and Tony Thomas ripped a two-run double off the right-field wall. Brad Boyer capped the five-run inning with a sacrifice fly to center.
Lawley provided a few glimmers of hope for Binghamton with two big swings. The B-Mets cleanup hitter deposited a 2-1 pitch from New Britain starter Jason Wheeler in the second inning over the left-field wall, cutting New Britain's lead to four. He struck again in the fourth with another solo blast, his third homer in as many at-bats, dating back to Monday night.
New Britain kept up the pressure in the fourth by getting the first five batters safely aboard. After Mike Kvasnicka blasted a two-run homer over the right-field fence, Robles loaded the bases on a pair of walks and a single. Reliever Ryan Fraser took the reins and collected the final three outs of the inning, while allowing one run along the way.
Trailing by a half-dozen, Binghamton refused to roll over. In the sixth, Jayce Boyd bounced an RBI triple off the right-center field wall, his first three-bagger of the season. The B-Mets threw two more on the board in the eighth on RBI singles from Brian Burgamy and Brandon Nimmo. The comeback bid fell three runs short as Matt Summers allowed one run in the ninth before shutting the door.
Robles (5-6) was tagged for a season-high eight runs on nine hits over three innings of work. He issued two walks and failed to record a strikeout for the first time this season. Wheeler (2-1) allowed three runs on five hits over six innings to pick up his second win as a Rock Cat.
The B-Mets (49-33) continue their four-game series against the Rock Cats on Wednesday night at 7:05 PM. RHP Tyler Pill takes the mound against RHP Tyler Duffey. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show, starting at 6:50 PM, can be heard on News Radio 1290 WNBF and on the Binghamton Mets Baseball Network via the TuneIn App.
