Portland, Maine- The New Britain Rock Cats scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning to defeat the Portland Sea Dogs 9-7 Sunday afternoon at Hadlock Field. The Rock Cats take three of four from the Sea Dogs in the series and 16 of 24 on the season.
Tied at seven in the ninth, Nathan Hanson (3-for-5, 2 R) tripled with one out and scored on a two out single by Michael Hollimon off Eammon Portice (3-5) giving the Rock Cats an 8-7 lead. Jair Fernandez added a RBI double to give the Twins affiliate an insurance run.
Andrew Albers (2-0) picked-up the win tossing three innings of relief allowing one hit and striking out two.
The Sea Dogs rallied back from a 7-1 deficit, highlighted by a five run sixth inning. Oscar Tejeda led off with a single and Mitch Dening continued his hot hitting with a RBI double. Dening scored on a Hassan RBI ground out. Will Middlebrooks added a two run double and Tim Federowicz delivered the game tying hit with a RBI single.
Eastern League All-Star Stephen Fife failed to notch his league leading 11th win Sunday as the 24 year-old equaled his shortest outing of the season lasting only 3.2 innings. Fife's ERA climbed to 3.94 after surrendering five runs in the fourth. The inning was highlighted by a Brian Dozier three run homer.
Chris Parmelee added a two run homer in the fifth off Caleb Clay as New Britain took a commanding 7-1 lead.
The fifth inning had the ingredients for a very big inning for the Sea Dogs. Ryan Khoury and Alex Hassan both singled with one out and the teams leading hitting and home run leader Chiang to follow. Chiang hit a line shot that bounced up off the right field pavilion façade above the yellow line for what should have been a three run homer. However, the umpires ruled it a double. Sea Dogs' Manager Kevin Boles was ejected by first base umpire Scott Mahoney. Chiang had to settle for the RBI double, it was his 65th career double; he is now just one shy of the Sea Dogs career franchise mark of 66 held by Brandon Moss.
The Sea Dogs will begin a three game series with the Binghamton Mets on Monday at 6:00 PM at Hadlock Field. All-Star Alex Wilson (8-4, 2.85) will get the start for the Sea Dogs. The Mets will send righty Matt Harvey (0-2, 9.24) to the mound.
