Altoona Curve News Release
ERIE, Pa. - With the Altoona Curve leading in the series two-games-to-one, looking for their first series win since mid-June, the Erie SeaWolves score nine runs on 13 hits to split the series at two games each in a 9-3 victory on Sunday afternoon at Jerry Uht Park.
For the first time in the series, the SeaWolves got on the board first as they put together four straight hits in the first inning against Curve starter Phil Irwin to take a 2-0 lead. Irwin, despite the hits allowed, had five strikeouts through his first five outs of the game and had a quick second inning to keep the score at 2-0.
The Curve worked a run across in the fourth off SeaWolves starter Brooks Brown as Brock Holt doubled to lead off the inning, moved to third on a fly ball and then scored on a groundball off the bat of Tony Sanchez.
In the next inning, the SeaWolves added two more to their lead to extend it to three as Diek Scram homered to right-center, scoring a runner that reached on an error to take a 4-1 lead.
The SeaWolves extended their lead in the fifth with a huge inning as they had six straight singles off Irwin and seven total singles in the inning, the most the Curve have allowed in one frame this season. All told, five runs scored and the SeaWolves led 9-1. Irwin (3-2) was lifted and his line finished with 4.1 IP and 11 hits allowed with nine runs, eight earned with five strikeouts.
In the top of the sixth, the Curve put two on against Brown (2-4) and added their second run on a sacrifice fly by Andrew Lambo to cut the deficit to 9-2.
Brown (2-4) was lifted after the seventh inning as he allowed only two runs on four hits and he gave way to Jared Gayhart. In the eighth, Gayhart allowed three walks and an RBI single to Lambo, his second run batted in on the day, to cut the lead to 9-3. The Curve ended the inning though with the bases loaded.
Matt McSwain, who came on for Irwin in the fifth, pitched extremely well in relief as he allowed two hits and no runs in 3.2 innings to complete the ballgame.
With the loss, the Curve ended up splitting the series with the SeaWolves, taking the middle two games of the series with Erie winning the first and last games.
With the four-game series over in Erie, the Curve (39-54) will travel to Akron, Ohio for a three game series beginning Monday night against the Aeros. For the Curve, LHP Jeff Locke (3-1, 3.45) will make the start and he will be opposed by RHP Austin Adams (1-4, 7.01). Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. at Canal Park in Akron, Ohio with pregame coverage on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network will begin at 6:35 p.m.
