Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
BINGHAMTON, NY - The Binghamton Mets took the rubber match of five-game series against the New Hampshire Cats 4-3 on Eric Campbell's walk-off, two-out double in the bottom of the ninth inning this afternoon at NYSEG Stadium.
Left-handed reliever Evan Crawford started the ninth looking to preserve a tie game. Crawford, in his first appearance since returning from a month-long stay on the disabled list, quickly recorded the first two outs of the inning.
With two gone, B-Mets shortstop Niuman Romero chopped a single back up the middle to prolong the inning. The next batter Campbell launched a 2-1 offering off the base of the right-centerfield fence. Romero scored from first base standing up for the game-winning run to cap Binghamton's third walk-off victory of 2011.
The bottom of the ninth inning was only necessary due to Rhiner Cruz's rough ninth inning. The right-hander entered with a 3-1 lead and in search of his fifth save, but allowed two runs on four hits. Callix Crabbe drove home the game-tying run with a two-out single to right field to hand Cruz his first blown save of the year.
The missed opportunity took a potential win away from Tobi Stoner. In his tenth start of the year, the righty allowed just one run on five hits over six and a third innings of work. His only blemish was a solo home run allowed to Moises Sierra in the seventh.
Sierra's drive cut Binghamton's lead to two. The B-Mets were led in the early stages by Salomon Manriquez. The catcher tagged starter Zach Stewart for three hits and collected three RBI, including a solo home run in the second inning.
With Binghamton leading 3-1, Mark Sobolewski's one-out double to right-centerfield in the seventh chased Stoner from the game. Ricky Brooks got the call and induced two fly outs on just two pitches to escape harm. He returned for the eighth and tossed a perfect inning.
Binghamton's two-out rally in the ninth gave them their third straight one-run victory and made a winner of Rhiner Cruz for the second time this season.
The B-Mets (38-57) hits the road for a week-long swing that will bring them to Portland, Maine for three and Reading, Pennsylvania for four. RHP Matt Harvey (0-2, 9.24) will start things off against RHP Alex Wilson (8-4, 2.85) for the Sea Dogs with first pitch set for 7:00pm tomorrow night. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show begins at 6:45pm on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
