SUSPENSION BRIDGING THE GAP: The Rochester Red Wings tonight conclude yesterday's suspended game against Columbus (Indians) before playing the finale of the 4-game series at Frontier Field. The regularly-scheduled game will now be 7 innings long. The Red Wings tomorrow welcome Norfolk (Orioles) to town for a 4-game series to continue the 8-game homestand. Rochester started the homestand by splitting Saturday's doubleheader, getting a 2-0 win before suffering a 1-0 defeat.
a Yesterday's game was suspended due to rain in the bottom of the 5th inning with the score tied 1-1. There was one out with Sean Burroughs on first base (single) and an 0-2 count to Chris Parmelee.
a Yesterday's game was delayed 3 times by rain. The game started after a one-hour, 13-minute delay. There was then a 44-minute delay in the top of the 3rd inning. The final delay was in the bottom of the 5th.
RIGHT SAID STEADY: The Red Wings have been playing .500 baseball beginning May 15, going 9-9 in 18 games. The stretch began after a 6-game losing streak May 9-14.
a The Wings Saturday began a stretch of playing 16 of 20 games through June 21 against teams with a current losing record. The lone exception is a 4-game series at Indianapolis (Pirates) beginning Saturday.
a Following the above-mentioned stretch, the Wings will play 17 straight games leading into the All-Star break against teams with a current winning record, including 5 against the IL North Division-leading Pawtucket Red Sox July 2-6.
HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS: The Red Wings are 17-15 at Frontier Field, including a 13-11 mark as the home team. The Wings, meanwhile, are just 6-17 in true road games. The Rochester pitching staff has a 2.81 ERA (86 ER/275.0 IP) in 32 games along Morrie Silver Way compared to a 4.98 ERA (106 ER/191.2 IP) in 23 games outside the Flower City.
a The Red Wings went 32-41 at Frontier Field in 2011, including one loss as the "road" team in a make-up game with Columbus.
a Rochester last had a winning record at Frontier Field when the 2008 club went 46-26.
ONE AND NONE: The Red Wings have been held to one or no runs 13 times in 55 games (23.6 percent). That total includes 5 shutouts. Rochester's 1-0 defeat in the 2nd game of yesterday's doubleheader was its first shut-out loss as the home team. (The Red Wings lost 2-0 to the Empire State Yankees as the "road" team at Frontier Field April 18.)
a The Red Wings rank last in the IL with 177 runs scored, 21 behind the next closest team Durham (Rays), which has 198 runs. Pawtucket leads the league with 288 runs, 111 more than Rochester.
FIRST THING'S FIRST: The Red Wings have scored a first-inning run in 16 games, including the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, and are 9-7 in those contests. The opposition has scored a first-inning run 13 times and the Wings are 3-10 in those affairs. Rochester pitchers have allowed only one first-inning run in the last 8 games.
a The Wings are outscoring the opposition 23-21 in the first inning.
EXTRA! EXTRA!: Including yesterday's suspended game, the Red Wings have recorded at least one extra-base hit in 30 consecutive games, their longest such streak in one season since April 16-May 16, 2010, when they had a 30-game streak. Rochester last recorded at least one extra-base hit in at least 31 straight games July 31-September 5, 2009, when they had a 38-game streak.
a The Wings are batting only .125 (7-for-56) with runners in scoring position in their last 8 games, including a 1-for-16 (.063) mark in their last 3 contests.
KEEPING IT IN THE YARD: The Red Wings' pitching staff has allowed only 2 home runs in its last 8 games. Both homers came Wednesday at Charlotte (White Sox) off righthander Liam Hendriks. Including the final 7 innings of that game, Red Wings' pitchers have gone 30 consecutive innings without giving up a long ball.
a Rochester hurlers have given up just 37 homers all season, the 5th-lowest mark in the league. Norfolk leads the circuit with only 30 homers allowed.
IMPROVED: The Red Wings' pitching staff ranks 8th in the IL with a 3.70 ERA. The success comes on the heels of ranking last in the league in ERA in both of the last 2 seasons and 2nd to last in 2009.
a Since allowing a season-high 11 runs May 12 at Syracuse, Red Wings' pitchers have allowed 4 runs or less in 16 of 20 games. The exceptions in that time, though, include 13 runs (12 earned) May 25 at Gwinnett and 10 runs Wednesday at Charlotte.
a Red Wings' starting pitchers have just one win in the last 9 games, courtesy of lefthander Luke French's effort in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader.
CALLING ALL STARS: Online voting for the 2012 Triple-A All-Star Game is underway. The game, featuring the International League and the Pacific Coast League, will be played July 11 at Buffalo's Coca-Cola Field. Fans can vote by visiting RedWingsBaseball.com and clicking on the "Fan Zone" tab.
a Leading Red Wings candidates include Anthony Slama, owner of 9 saves, a 0.40 ERA, and a 17.0 consecutive scoreless innings streak; and Matt Carson, who leads Rochester with a .288 average, 51 hits, 19 extra-base hits, 15 doubles, 16 RBI, 76 total bases, and 23 runs. Slama is tied for 4th in the league in saves while Carson is tied for 3rd in doubles.
