International League Names Players of the Week
June 4, 2012 - International League (IL1) News Release
The International League announced today that Lehigh Valley catcher John Suomi and Charlotte pitcher Terry Doyle have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the period from May 28-June 3. Each player is the second from his respective club to win an IL weekly award this season, following Tyler Cloyd of Lehigh Valley (April 5-8) and Charles Shirek of Charlotte (April 16-22).
JOHN SUOMI, Lehigh Valley IronPigs IL BATTER OF THE WEEK
Lehigh Valley's John Suomi entered the week with just ten hits on the season, having played only two games in which he collected multiple hits. Then a four-hit outburst on Memorial Day sparked Suomi to a week in which he led the International League in batting average, on-base percentage, and doubles, while finishing 2nd in hits, slugging percentage, runs scored, and extra-base hits. He banged out at least two hits in all five games in which he played for the week, finishing with a sizzling .600 average. Suomi came up big when it counted for the IronPigs, as evidenced by three go-ahead hits including a game-winning RBI double in the 8th inning Thursday. In a single week, the reserve catcher and first baseman raised his season average from .244 to .361. His 4-5 effort on Monday set career highs for hits and total bases. He was a late addition to the lineup that evening after starting catcher Erik Kratz was called to the Phillies during batting practice.
31-year-old John Suomi is in his 13th professional season. He is a native of Toronto, Canada.
TERRY DOYLE, Charlotte Knights IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Knights right-hander Terry Doyle was brilliant in both of his starts this week, winning both times and surrendering just five hits in 13.1 innings of work. He gave up only one hit to the Rochester Red Wings on Memorial Day in Charlotte. Doyle blanked his opponents for 7.1 innings to lead the Knights to a 4-1 victory. His first run allowed of the week didn't come until the 5th frame of Saturday night's start in Gwinnett. The Braves managed two runs off of four hits against Doyle, but Charlotte still won the game 5-2. Doyle has vaulted himself into the League's top ten in ERA for the season, and he is now 5th in strikeouts and 2nd in innings pitched.
26-year-old Terry Doyle is in his fifth professional season, and his first above the Double-A level. Doyle is a native of Concord, Massachusetts.
