Syracuse Mets News Release

The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, dropped the finale of a four-game series in Indianapolis with a 4-3 loss to the Indians. Syracuse rallied late, cutting Indianapolis' lead in half with an eighth-inning run, but the Chiefs would get no further as the Indians won their third straight game.

Each team began the game with some first-inning offense. Syracuse (26-31) started strong thanks to a one-out triple from second baseman Jarrett Hoffpauir against Indians left-hander Rudy Owens. Left fielder Mark Teahen, the team RBI leader, then followed with a sacrifice fly to score Hoffpauir. Teahen's now driven in 40 runs on the season.

But Indianapolis (34-23) did the Chiefs one better in the bottom of the frame. After two quick outs recorded by left-hander Zach Duke, Starling Marte drew a two-out walk. First baseman Jeff Clement then followed with a two-home run to right field, his fourth extra-base hit of the series, to give Indianapolis a 2-1 lead.

In the third inning, Syracuse showed it could play long ball too. Center fielder Corey Brown blasted the first pitch of the inning from Owens over the right-center field wall for a solo home run, his 13th long ball of the season. That evened the score at two runs apiece.

The Indians weren't done, though. In the fifth inning, Indianapolis broke a 2-2 tie thanks to Marte. With Chase d'Arnaud on first base and one out, Marte lined a run-scoring triple to center field, putting the Indians ahead 3-2. He then raced home on a sacrifice fly to center field from Clement.

The Chiefs would launch one final rally in the eighth inning. Teahen led off the frame with a double, and two batters later, right fielder Brett Carroll singled him home, cutting the Indianapolis lead to 4-3. But reliever Evan Meek then induced a double-play ground ball from Carlos Rivero, ending the threat. Right-hander Tim Wood would follow with a perfect ninth inning, cutting down the Chiefs to earn the save.

Syracuse next returns home to start a run of 20 consecutive games at Alliance Bank Stadium. The Chiefs will play the Louisville Bats at 7:00 on Tuesday night, with Syracuse left-hander John Lannan and Louisville right-hander Tim Gustafson set to start.
