(Allentown, PA) -- The International League announced today that Lehigh Valley catcher John Suomi and Charlotte pitcher Terry Doyle have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the period from May 28-June 3.

Sparked by a four-hit outburst on Memorial Day, Suomi went on to a week in which he led the IL in batting average (.600), on-base percentage (.600) and doubles (4), while finishing 2nd in hits (12), slugging percentage (1.100), runs scored (7) and extra-base hits (6). He banged out at least two hits in all five games in which he played for the week. The 31-year-old also came up big when it counted for the IronPigs, as evidenced by three go-ahead hits including a game-winning RBI double in the 8th inning Thursday. In a single week, the reserve catcher and first baseman raised his season average from .244 to .361. His 4-5 effort on Monday tied career highs for hits (4) and total bases (8). He was a late addition to the lineup that evening after starting catcher Erik Kratz was called to the Phillies during batting practice.

In parts of four seasons with the IronPigs, the native of Toronto is in his 13th professional season.

Suomi becomes the first IronPig to win an IL Batter of the Week award this season and just the 5th all-time (Andy Tracy won the award three times; others were Michael Taylor, John Mayberry and Jeff Larish). Earlier this season, both RHP Tyler Cloyd (April 9) and RHP Scott Elarton (May 7) won IL Pitcher of the Week awards.
