Charlotte Knights News Release
(Fort Mill, SC) - Charlie Shirek tossed seven shutout innings, Josh Phegley ripped two hits, and the Charlotte Knights beat the Gwinnett Braves 3-2 on Monday in the finale of their two-game series from Knights Stadium. The win was Charlotte's third over their last four games against the first place Braves and pushed them to just one-half game behind Gwinnett in the South Division.
Shirek (6-3, 3.82) was marvelous on Monday, allowing just three hits en route to his team-high sixth win of the season. He struck-out four batters and walked none. It was his second win of the season against Gwinnett.
The Knights scored all three of their runs in the fifth inning and Phegley led the way offensively with a 2-3 night at the plate. The Charlotte catcher is currently riding an eight-game hit streak and has upped his batting average to .292 on the season.
Second baseman Ray Olmedo went 1-4 at the plate for Charlotte and now has a hit in 13-straight games. Olmedo also stole his seventh base of the season.
Charlotte (33-25) scored all of their runs off of Gwinnett starter Eric Junge (3-5, 4.16), who allowed three runs on six hits over seven innings.
Earlier in the day, Charlotte right-hander Terry Doyle was named as the International League's Pitcher of the Week for the period from May 28-June 3. Doyle posted a 2-0 mark with a 1.35 ERA last week.
Fans also had a chance to see some Carolina Panthers take batting practice at Knights Stadium on Monday. Members of the Panthers also signed autographs for fans before Monday's game.
The Knights will now hit the road and travel to Toledo, Ohio to start a four-game series with the Toledo Mud Hens. RHP Matt Zaleski will take the ball in the opener on Tuesday. The Mud Hens will send RHP Brooks Brown to the hill. Charlotte returns home to Knights Stadium on Thursday, June 14 to begin an eight-game homestand.
