Robinson's Late Winner Gives 67's Win over Battalion
November 7, 2021 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Ottawa 67's News Release
In a tightly-contested battle for first place in the OHL Eastern Conference, the Ottawa 67's earned a 2-1 win over the North Bay Battalion.
Dylan Robinson scored the gamewinner on a shorthanded penalty shot with 27.6 seconds to play, after Brady Stonehouse opened the scoring in the second period, with his first OHL goal. Will Cranley was superb in net, stopping 26 of 27 Battalion shots.
"I liked everything better, today," said head coach Dave Cameron, "We were ready, we had no passengers, we were fast, we were competitive. We made good decisions, our 'D' had good gaps, our forwards competed, and our special teams were good."
A physical first period saw both teams trade chances, and hits, but neither group could solve the opposing netminder. Both Cranley and Battalion goaltender Dom DiVincentiis stood tall, and the scoreless tie lasted until the second period.
6:43 into the middle frame, Stonehouse stole the puck at centre ice, and streaked in alone on the North Bay goal. His first shot was a pad stop, but Stonehouse corralled his own rebound, and put it home for his first OHL goal, and a 1-0 Ottawa lead.
"It was just really relieving to get that first one," said Stonehouse, "I think the first one really builds your confidence, I knew it was coming eventually. It's good to get one, and then build my confidence from here."
A series of powerplays, and strong offensive zone play saw the 67's control most of the period, but a Kyle Jackson deflection with 1:05 remaining sent these two to the third knotted up at 1-1. Despite the deadlock, the Barber Poles were out-shooting the Battalion 29-19 after 40 minutes.
The third period was a wild affair, in which both teams were given opportunities on the powerplay, and saw glorious scoring chances. Ottawa outshot North Bay 10-8, but were in danger of falling behind late, forced to kill a penalty with 1:18 remaining.
On the penalty kill, however, Robinson forced a turnover, and went in on a breakaway. Ty Nelson slashed him from behind, and Robinson was awarded a penalty shot with 27.6 seconds to play. With the crowd at The Arena at TD Place on the edge of their seats, Robinson moved in on DiVincentiis, and beat him glove-side to give the 67's the lead.
Despite a last-second flurry, Cranley closed the door, and the Barber Poles earned a dramatic 2-1 win.
With the win, the 67's move into a tie with North Bay for first in the Eastern Conference.
"We knew where they were in the standings when we came today," Robinson said, "Our goal was to just compete all 60 minutes and we'll beat them, and that's what happened."
