Erie Otters News Release

Sarnia, Ontario - A long border-crossing weekend came to an end for the Erie Otters on Sunday afternoon, as the team traveled to Sarnia for their first battle of the season against the Sting. With three of a possible four points on the weekend under their belt, the Otters looked to close out the trip taking everything they could. Sarnia would come into the game fresh off a big road win in Saginaw, but still battling at the last place spot in the Ontario Hockey League standings.

Marshall Nicholls would get the nod in net for Erie, saving seven in the opening frame. Early in the first period, Erie would find themselves on a pair of power play opportunities, but unlike their recent success, would be unable to capitalize. A relatively pedestrian period would see the Sting work their way to a few opportunities offensively, but nothing too dangerous. After 20 minutes of play, the Otters and Sting would be knotted up in a scoreless affair, with Sarnia taking :42 of power play time and a 7-6 shots advantage into the second period.

Erie would kill off the Sarnia power play early in the second period, and five-on-five would return. 6:38 into the second period, the Sarnia Sting would find the back of the net as Nikita Tarasevich (1) would score his first OHL goal from a one-time feed by Alex Geci. Sarnia would take a 1-0 lead after their first shot of the period. Erie's offense would slowly start to wake up, but as it would, the Otters would see Brendan Hoffmann back in the box for a cross-check. The Otters would kill off the penalty, and start too see more offensive productivity. As the Otters started to push in the final minute of the second, the Sting would commit a delayed-penalty, that would give the Otters a full two-minute power play heading into the third period. Sarnia would lead 1-0 after two, and lead shots 17-14.

Down 1-0 and with a power play to start the third, the Otters would be unable to convert, as the Sting would start to take over and finish Sunday's game. 4:17 into the third, Ty Voit (4) would continue his point-every-game streak, and score what would be the game-winner, on the power play. With over half the period gone by, Nolan Dann (4) would get an assist from Voit past Nicholls, and the Otters would trail 3-0 with time running out. As Carey Terrance would go off for a double-minor high-sticking, the Otters would be on the four minute kill with eight minutes left. Not willing to go out without a fight, shorthanded Noah Sedore (3) would battle behind the net with Sarnia goaltender Anston Thornton, come up with the puck, and sneak it over his left leg pad on a backhand to make it 3-1. With a pair of penalties giving the Otters 1:14 of five-on-three time, they'd pull goaltender Nicholls and make it a six-on-three. With chaos in front of the net, Thornton and Co. would keep the puck out, the penalties would expire, and the Otters would remain net-emptied. With just over :30 left, Sarnia would find the puck redirected off an Erie stick in the neutral-zone into the empty net, and secure the 4-1 win for the Sarnia Sting.

With the loss, the Otters take three of a possible six points during their weekend road trip, going 1-1-1. Erie ends its four-game road trip in Guelph on Friday, November 12 before returning home to the Erie Insurance Arena to host the Ontario Hockey League's top-ranked team, the London Knights on Saturday, November 13. Saturday night will be the Otters annual Military Appreciation Night (pres. by UPMC Health Plan, UPMC Hamot, and Plyler Entry Systems), as the team looks to donate over 1500 tickets to active-duty and retired military personnel in the Erie community.
