Roadrunners Get Past Wild 4-1

TUCSON, AZ - The Iowa Wild (2-5-1-0, 5 points) were defeated by the Tucson Roadrunners (4-1-1-0, 9 points) 4-1 on Friday night at the Tucson Convention Center Arena. Tucson rookie Nick Merkley scored twice and goalie Marek Langhamer (1-0-1) stopped 33 of 34 shots, as the Roadrunners claimed the first meeting in AHL history between the two clubs. Wild goaltender Niklas Svedberg (2-5-1) set a team record with his eighth straight start, maki ng 25 saves in defeat. Iowa forward Colton Beck extended his team record goal-scoring streak to six games with the Wild's loan tally. Iowa remains in Tucson for a rematch on Saturday at 9:05 PM CT.
After nearly two scoreless periods of play, the Roadrunners caught a break on a rush into the Iowa zone. Defenseman Kyle Capobianco sent the puck to the Iowa net where Svedberg deflected the puck away. Forward Lane Pederson swept in for the rebound and slipped the puck past the Wild goalie for the 1-0 lead with 1:33 left in the middle period.
The Roadrunners struck 4:17 into the third period with a one-timer off the stick of Nick Merkley from a deflection in front. The Roadrunners rookie tipped a shot from the high slot by Lawson Crouse. Defenseman Joel Hanley added an assist on the 2-0 lead for Tucson. The Roadrunners expanded their lead to 3-0 at 6:49 when Merkley swatted a rebound out of midair and past Svedberg for his fourth goal of the season. Defenseman Dysin Mayo added the lone assist on the tally. Forward Tyler Gaudet added an empty-net tally with 2:06 left in the contest for the 4-1 lead. Colton Beck scored at 18:44 of the third period to spoil Langhamer's shutout for the 4-1 final score. Mario Lucia added the lone assist as Beck scored in his sixth straight game.
After a pair of road games in Tucson, Iowa returns home to meet the San Antonio Rampage on Thursday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. It's Dollar dog night with $1 hotdogs, $1 pretzels and $1 small popcorns - presented by LAZER 103.3. Trivia night takes place in "The Fort," previously known as the River's Edge Restaurant, before the game.
Iowa and San Antonio faceoff again on Friday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena. It is a Bus beer night with $2 beers presented by 100.3 The Bus. The team is also holding a coat drive at the game. Fans receive a free weekday ticket voucher with a donation.
