Greenville Swamp Rabbits News Release
Greenville, SC: 6,825 fans witnessed the Road Warriors fall 4-3 in a shootout against the Cincinnati Cyclones.
The first period was an even battle but Cincinnati scored with just under six minutes left. Josh Shalla scored on an odd man rush with a great feed from Jeff Winchester. Greenville fired 15 shots on net but Brian Foster rejected all opportunities.
Greenville was able to convert on their chances in the second. Chad Ziegler found a loose puck in the crease to score his second goal of the year and tie the game at one. With less than three minutes in the period, Ryan Flanigan scored with the man advantage to give Greenville a 2-1 lead. As the intermission horn sounded, Bretton Stamler took a five minute major penalty for spearing and a game misconduct.
The Cyclones took a penalty early in the third, denying the visiting team a power play. During four on four play, the Cyclones tied the game up at two. Josh Birkholz scored his eighth of the year after intercepting a Ryan Flanigan clearing attempt. Birkholz's shot deflected off T.J. Reynolds' skate into the net. Dan Eves gave Cincinnati a 3-2 lead halfway through the period with his eighth of the year. The Road Warriors tied the game up two minutes later with Connolly's 19th of the year. Marc-Olivier Vallerand found Connolly open in the slot for the goal. This forced overtime and eventually shootouts. Through five rounds, Jordie Johnston and Bretton Cameron scored for Greenville while Birkholz and Shalla scored for Cincinnati. In the sixth round, Sean Berkstresser was denied and Mike Embach scored to clinch the Cyclones victory. Greenville put a season high 48 shots on net. Foster saved 45 of those shots for the victory. Scott Stajcer was credited with the shootout loss while saving 33 of 36 shots.
