Trenton Titans News Release
Trenton, NJ - The Titans, proud ECHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, fell to the Kalamazoo Wings, 2-1, in overtime Saturday night at the Sun National Bank Center in Trenton. Despite the loss the Titans nab three of a possible four points in back-to-back overtime contests after a 3-2 win over rival and Eastern Conference leader Reading last night.
The teams skated a scoreless opening period, but the Wings (23-20-4-1, 51 pts) drew first blood just :31 into the second period when Brett Lysak deflected a puck past Scott Wedgewood (14-16-3-1, 25 saves) to put the visitors ahead.
Trenton (19-23-4-3, 45 pts) tied things up later in the second when Jacob Cepis grabbed a loose puck just outside the crease and pulled a quick forehand-backhand move on Joel Martin (21-17-4-1, 45 saves) and put the puck in the top left corner to tie the game with 5:09 remaining. Corey Tamblyn and Chad Langlais earned helpers on Cepis' 14th goal of the season.
The Titans had a chance to win early in overtime when Andy Bombach was awarded a penalty shot after being hauled down on a breakaway, but failed to convert. Shortly after, Langlais was sent off for hooking on a similar play, and Kalamazoo's Sam Ftorek scored on the ensuing power play to steal the game for the visitors.
The goal was the first power play goal allowed by the Titans in five games, dating back to Jan 30 th against Florida. The shutout streak spanned 16 successful kills, including the first six tonight against the Wings. That stretch helped the Titans climb to the top of the league's penalty kill rankings, now operating at 86.4% on the season. The Titans were held scoreless in six PP chances in the game, including a 5-on-3 midway through the second.
Trenton will look to exact some revenge as they head to Kalamazoo for a Valentine's Day rematch with the Wings on Thursday at 7 pm. The team will continue on to Cincinnati for games against the Cyclones Friday and Saturday (both 7:35 starts) before returning home to host Elmira in a President's Day showdown on February 18 th . Please note the special start time for that contest is 1 pm. As always, those games can be heard on the flagship station 107.7 FM The Bronc, or online at 1077thebronc.com with the voice of the Titans, "The Bronc" Daryle Dobos.
