Rivermen UpEnded in Atlantic City 3-2
April 1, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Peoria Rivermen News Release
Atlantic City, NJ â Down 3-1 entering the third period for the second game in a row, the Peoria Rivermen were unable to "fool" the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies into giving up the two goals needed to allow them to tie the contest, losing 3-2 in front of 1,894 on Friday night at Historic Boardwalk Hall.
The Rivermen did score with 1:35 remaining in the game and their netminder Alfie Michaud pulled for the extra attacker; Michaud was pulled with just less than four minutes remaining. Tyler Rennette, in behind the Atlantic City goal, took a pass from defenseman Ed Hill and found defenseman Trevor Byrne, who â from just above the left hash marks â pumped his fifth tally of the season past Atlantic City goaltender Trevor Koenig.
Peoria (36-23-8, 80 points) fell to 13-16-3 on the road and lost for the first time this season at Boardwalk Hall in four opportunities. The Rivermen had won six in a row against the Boardwalk Bullies dating back to November 6. The loss combined with a Toledo win at home over the Johnstown Chiefs dropped Peoria out of the fourth and final playoff spot by one point. Atlantic City (40-21-8, 88 points) maintained its hold on first place, keeping itself three points in front of the Reading Royals with three more games played. The Boardwalk Bullies have won four in a row overall and five straight at Boardwalk Hall, improving to 21-9-5.
Michaud (26-11-5) stopped 23 of 26 shots in defeat, while Koenig (26-12-4) turned away 28 of 30 chances in the victory.
The Boardwalk Bullies took a 1-0 lead early in the contest on their first scoring sequence of the game. Defenseman Dave Reid fired a shot toward the Rivermen goal from the right point that was blocked in the slot on its way there. Michaud thought the puck had made its way through traffic, pulling himself out of position and looking back toward the goal. That allowed J-F Plourde to collect the loose puck and easily snap it into the net.
Atlantic City pushed its lead to 2-0 at 3:16 of the middle stanza on the power play. Derek Edwardson worked a give-and-go with Jason Notermann in the right face-off circle to create the opportunity. At the top of the right face-off circle, Edwardson fed the puck down to Notermann, who was at the bottom of the circle. Edwardson drove to the right hash marks, took the back pass from Notermann and whistled his 23rd tally of the year inside the left goal post.
The Rivermen got on the board at 6:28 of the second. Defenseman Warren Toews, playing the right wing with Peoria down to eight healthy forwards, took a shot from the right face-off circle that was stopped by Koenig. The rebound was loose in the slot for rookie Jake Riddle, who barreled down the slot and hammered in his 10th marker of the year.
The Boardwalk Bullies took their second two-goal lead of the period just after a power play expired with 4:41 left in the second. Shawn Mather, at the bottom of the left face-off circle along the boards, took a chip pass from Edwardson and found Notermann in the slot for a one-time slap shot goal into the upper right corner. It was Notermann's team-leading 28th tally of the year and 15th on the power play (T-1st in the ECHL).
Tomorrow night â Saturday, April 2, the Rivermen battle the Trenton Titans in the seventh and final meeting of the year between the clubs. Game time is 6:00 p.m. at the Sovereign Bank Arena.
