Collins stonewalls Gladiators

April 1, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Augusta Lynx News Release

Rookie Chad Collins made his first ECHL start stand out with several brilliant saves, many in the closing minutes of a 3-2 Augusta Lynx win over the Gwinnett Gladiators on Friday night.

After a scoreless first period, the Gladiators jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 4:56 on a Brad Schell goal, but the Lynx jumped right back less than a minute later on Jamie Johnson's 21st goal of the season to make it 1-1. Joe Markusen's point shot was deflected in by Johnson, with George Nistas also picking up a helper on the goal at 5:42. Gwinnett would reclaim the lead at 12:29 when Kevin Doell scored on a feed from Schell to forge a 2-1 advantage after 40 minutes of play.

In the third period, Collins took over in the defensive zone for Augusta while Sean Connolly and Eric Johansson took over the offense. Connolly took a Johnasson pass and split the Gladiator defensemen to beat Berkhoel and tie the game at 8:04. Then while down a man, Johansson took the rebound of a Gwinnett shot from his own end down the ice, using Jamie Johnson as a decoy on a 2-on-1 advantage and wristed a shot into the Gladiator goal for the eventual game winning goal and a 3-2 final.

Solid all night in the Lynx net, Collins made an incredible pair of glove saves to preserve the lead for the Lynx late in the third period. In all, the rookie netminder turned aside 47 shots for his first ECHL win. Berkhoel turned aside 11 in the loss for Gwinnett.

Augusta is back in action tomorrow night against the South Carolina Stingrays at 7:05 pm. Pre-game show kicks off at 6:35 pm on NEWSTALKSPORTS 1630. The Lynx return home on Sunday against the Mississippi Sea Wolves for a 4:05 pm start. Tickets are on sale now through the Lynx office at (706) 724-4ICE, at all TicketMaster locations, and on line at www.TicketMaster.com.
