Louisiana IceGators News Release
Lafayette, LA - The Mississippi Sea Wolves scored three of their five unanswered goals in the 3rd period as the visitors overcame a 3-1 deficit to defeat the Louisiana IceGators 6-3, Friday night in the Cajundome.
The Sea Wolves drew first blood at 1:15 in record setting fashion. Louis Dumont, playing in his 700th ECHL game, fired a slap shot from the right circle beating Nathan Marsters to the blocker side for a quick 1-0 advantage. Dumont, with that shift becoming, the 2nd player in league history to reach the 700 game plateau. The rest of the first period would belong to the Gators. At 9:55, Roger Leonard hustled after his own missed shot, took the puck to the right circle and fired a spinning wrist shot over Phil Sauve for a 1-1 tie. Assisting on Leonard's 8th of the season were Wes Mason and Shawn Skiehar. At 13:24 the Gators took the lead when Alex Sawruk broke free up the left wing, cut to the middle and squeezed the puck between the pads of Sauve for his first as a Gator and 4th of the season. The unlikely assists on the go ahead goal went to Doug MacIver and goaltender Nathan Martsters.
The Gators stretched the lead to 3-1 on Sawruk's 2nd of the game. At 3:38 of the 2nd period, while on the power play, David Turon fired a wrister from the slot toward the net, Sauve juggled the puck and Sawuk tapped it out of mid-air into the net for his 5th of the season. It took 10 seconds for the Wolves to erase the two goal deficit. At 5:57 Bates Battaglia (4) scored on a wrap around to the near post to cut the lead to 3-2. Just 10 seconds later at 6:07, Lucas Drake wound up all alone in front of the Gators net as Darryl Campbell hit him with a centering pass. A move to the forehand got Drake free and he slid the puck home for his 7th of the year and a tie game at 3-3.
The Sea Wolves power play would provide the margin of victory in the 3rd period. At 1:47, just as a power play ended, Austin Miller's shot from the point deflected off the stick of a Gators defender, past a screened Marsters for his 7th of the season and the eventual game winning goal. On another power play at 9:24, Travis Lisabeth pounced on a rebound pulled it to his backhand and slid it into the empty net for a 5-3 lead. Lisabeth's 24th of the year, ran his goal scoring streak to five straight games. Jay Legault (19) added an empty netter at 18:45 to make the final score 6-3.
With the loss, Louisiana's record is now 24-38-6, 54 points and 5th place in the South. The Gators outshot Mississippi 33-24. Power plays were 1-5 for the Gators and 1-3 for the Wolves.
The Gators next game is tomorow night, April 2, when the Gators host the Texas Wildcatters at 7:05pm. ALL games the remainder of the season can be heard on 960am "The Gator". In addition to the radio broadcasts, all games the rest of the way can be heard on the internet or viewed via the B2 Network at the team's website www.icegators.com.
