Rivermen Edged 2-1 in Overtime on the Road against Archrival Toledo
October 29, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Peoria Rivermen News Release
Toledo, Ohio â Rivermen goaltender Alfie Michaud nearly carried his team to an overtime shootout opportunity with more than 52 saves but came up 24 seconds short, allowing just his second goal of the night late in the 4-on-4 overtime session with the Rivermen falling to the archrival Toledo Storm 2-1 in front of 3,428 on Friday night at the Toledo Sports Arena.
Michaud allowed one goal on 21 shots in the opening session and then shut out the Storm with 29 saves over the final two periods of regulation. In overtime, Michaud â the sixth-year professional â stopped the first three chances he faced but gave up the 54th and final shot to Toledo veteran Rick Judson, who broke in down the left wing and fired his first of the season through Michaud's legs.
The Rivermen (1-0-1), who owned the best road record in the ECHL last season at 23-7-6, dropped their first of the season away from Carver Arena and the first of 11 meetings with Toledo, against whom they had a 10-0-2 record last year. The Storm (3-0-0) opened the season with three straight home wins, as they now head on the road for seven straight games.
Toledo goaltender Scott Fankhouser turned away 29 of 30 Rivermen shots in the victory.
The Storm dominated the Rivermen in the opening session, outshooting them 21-8, but were held to just a power play goal and a 1-0 lead.
With Chad Starling in the penalty box for tripping, Nick Parillo jumped out from behind the Peoria goal and found defenseman Jason Jozsa, who dropped into the right face-off circle and rifled his first of the season inside the left goal post.
Peoria equalized on just its 10th shot of the game. Tyler Rennette stole the puck along the left-wing boards, circled and clanged a rocket shot off the inside of the right goal post with Fankhouser screened on the play.
On Saturday, October 30, the Rivermen face off against the archrival Dayton Bombers in their second home game of the season. Game time is 7:05 p.m. at Carver Arena.
