Charlotte Checkers News Release
CHARLOTTE, NC â The Charlotte Checkers have announced today that their AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack, have assigned forward Dwight Helminen and right wing Lee Falardeau to Charlotte.
Falardeau, a 6'5" 215-pound native of Midland, Mich., was selected by the New York Rangers in the second round of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft going #33 overall. Making his professional debut, Falardeau leaves behind a career at Michigan State University where he accumulated 39 points and 91 PIMs in 108 games.
Hailing from Hancock, Mich., 5'10" 189-pound Dwight Helminen was selected by the Edmonton Oilers in round 8, going #244 overall in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. Also a rookie, the University of Michigan Wolverine racked up 80 points and 48 PIMs in 119 collegiate games.
Interstate college rivals, Falardeau and Helminen actually faced off against each other on March 5, 2004, when then No. 14 Michigan State tied No. 6 Michigan 4-4 in a thrilling back-and-forth contest. Helminen contributed a goal late in the second period, and Falardeau had a goal disallowed in overtime for striking it with a high stick. The two men find themselves together on a Charlotte team with a 2-0-0 record.
The Checkers put their undefeated record on the line tonight in a road game against the Columbia Inferno. On Saturday, the Checkers and Inferno face off once again, this time on the Checkers home turf at Cricket Arena. A pre-game tailgating party starts at 3:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon in the Merchandise Mart parking lot, and the arena doors open at 6:00 p.m. Saturday evening for the game.
Catch the Checkers Saturday a.m. practice from 10:00-11:00 a.m. to see Charlotte's finest preparing to defend their turf. The free practice is open to both the media and the public.
