San Diego Gulls News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska â The San Diego Gulls made four roster changes before their three-game series against the Alaska Aces, head coach Martin St. Amour announced on Friday. Among the transactions were the signings of forwards Boris Protsenko and Nick Ganga. Sean Murphy was activated from injured reserve and Sean O'Connor was loaned to the American Hockey League's Cincinnati Mighty Ducks.
Protsenko, 26, comes to the Gulls after splitting time last season with the Fresno Falcons and South Carolina Stingrays. In 49 games combined with Fresno and South Carolina, he notched 36 points (14g, 22a) and 57 penalty minutes. Protsenko also played two games for the AHL's Houston Aeros last season.
The 5-foot-11-inch, 194-pounder from Kiev, Ukraine began his career in 1998-99 with the AHL's Syracuse Crunch, netting a career high 24 goals, 24 assists and 48 points. Protsenko has also played for the Wheeling Nailers (2000-01) and two years in Russia. He was a third round selection of the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft.
Ganga, 26, joins the Blue and Orange after spending last season with the Long Beach Ice Dogs. Last season, Ganga recorded 31 points (15g, 16a) and 212 penalty minutes in 65 games and was selected to the 2003 ECHL all-star team. The 6-foot-3-inch, 202-pound native of Long Beach, Calif. began his career in 2001-02 with the United Hockey League's Quad City Mallards. Before turning pro, Ganga played three years at Ohio State University.
Murphy, 26, was activated from the seven-day injured list after sitting out the first two games with a groin injury. The rookie defenseman is expected to make his professional debut Friday night in Alaska. The 6-foot, 192-pound native of Aurora, Ontario spent the previous four seasons at York University.
O'Connor, 23, was loaned to Cincinnati on Wednesday. He racked up 22 penalty minutes in two games with San Diego this season after splitting time last season with the Augusta Lynx and AHL's San Antonio Lynx. The 6-foot-3-inch, 203-pound native of Victoria, British Columbia was a third round selection of the Florida Panthers in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft.
