San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO â NHL All-Star and two-time Stanley Cup winner Scott Gomez, who just signed with the Alaska Aces, will be in San Diego Wednesday to play against the Gulls. For information on tickets, call 619-224-GOAL, ext. 7.
The 24-year-old Gomez spent the previous five seasons with the NHL's New Jersey Devils. Last season Gomez tied for the NHL lead with 56 assists and was second on New Jersey with 70 points, tying a career high. He also notched 70 points in 1999-00, his rookie season.
Gomez was a key part of the Devils' Stanley Cup run in both 2000 and 2003. In the 2000 Stanley Cup Finals, he helped lead New Jersey to a six-game triumph over the Dallas Stars. Then again in the 2003 playoffs, Gomez led the team in assists and contributed 12 points (3g, 9a) in New Jersey's cup title over Anaheim, achieved in a tough seven-game series.
During his five-year tenure with the Devils, the 5-foot-11-inch, 200-pound native of Anchorage, Alaska has registered 306 points (70g, 236a). Only Patrick Elias has scored more points for New Jersey during that span.
In 1999-00 Gomez was an NHL All-Star and awarded the Calder Memorial Trophy, as the league's top rookie. He was a first round selection (27th overall) of New Jersey in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft. Gomez was also on the U.S. 2002 Winter Olympics and 2004 World Cup teams. As a result of the NHL lockout, Gomez had been contemplating a variety of offers overseas before ultimately deciding to play in his hometown of Anchorage, where he had twice been named High School Player of the Year.
"This is obviously huge news for the ECHL," Gulls Chief Operating Officer Tera Black said. "Scott has been a prolific player in the NHL and has two Stanley Cup championship rings. Obviously it's awkward to not see him in a Devils uniform right now with the NHL labor dispute. But from a Gulls standpoint, we're so excited that our fans will be able to see him play in our building and against our team."
Gomez had gone to arbitration with the Devils this summer before the lockout and had come out of the process with a one-year contract, which would have been his sixth season with the team.
The Gulls get their first crack at Gomez and the Aces at Sullivan Arena Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. Friday and Saturday's game begin at 8:15 PDT and Sunday's affair starts at 6:05 PST. ALL THREE GAMES CAN BE VIEWED ON THE GULLS' WEBSITE (WWW.SANDIEGOGULLS.COM) VIA B2 NETWORKS.
The Blue and Orange will also play the Aces when they return home on Wednesday, which is a "Win-Win" night. If the Gulls win on Wednesday, fans can exchange their ticket for a FREE ticket to the Thursday game against the Florida Everblades. WE WIN, YOU WIN.
All games can be heard live on KLSD 1360AM and www.sandiegogulls.com with Chris Ello calling the play-by-play. All home games and many road games can be viewed on the Gulls' web site, courtesy of B2 Networks. Click the B2 Networks link on the home page for a list of the upcoming telecasted games.
