Salmon Kings Add Derek Campbell to Active Roster

October 29, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL) News Release

In a league with a salary cap the man watching that bottom line has to be one part accountant and one part gambler. When you add or release a player you have to ensure you stay within the salary cap but at the same you have to be continually improving your odds. With this in mind Coach and General Manager Bryan Maxwell continued to shuffle his cards this week. New to Maxie's hand is 6'0", 195 lb Derek Campbell, a native of Duncan, BC.

"We have been fortunate to be able to add another island kid with this move," said Coach Maxwell. "He's going to be a nice addition to the team we have put together so far. He's a complete package. He's got speed, he shoots the puck and he throws his weight around. I think he'll fit in well," added Maxwell.

Campbell was signed today as a free agent. Campbell began the season in Toldeo Storm camp but was recently released. Campbell had cleared waivers prior to signing with the Salmon Kings.

"It's great to be playing here on the island in front of friends and family. Having a pro team here on the island has really made this move a simple one for me," said the 22 year old.

Along with the excitement of signing a new players comes the inevitable need to make room for that player. Therefore the signing of Campbell has resulted in Rob Simnor, a 25 year old defenceman from Vancouver being placed on waivers. Simnor played in all three of the Salmon Kings regular season games collecting zero points and 4 minutes in penalties.

Additionally the Salmon Kings also announced that Chemainus, BC native Kyle Stanton had also been placed on waivers. Stanton unfortunately did not appear in any game action for the Salmon Kings.

The Victoria Salmon Kings are back in practice mode now with skates taking place at Bear Mountain Arena. The Salmon Kings are in preparation for their next match-up, a two game series in Boise against the Idaho Steelheads, the defending Kelly Cup Champions on November 5 and 6, 2004.
