March 26, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Mississippi RiverKings News Release
ALLEN, TX --- The Mississippi RiverKings rallied with four goals in the final period and a half of the game, and then won in a shootout for 5-4 comeback victory over the Americans in Allen, Texas Saturday, March 26th. The victory evens the RiverKings' record to 30-30-5 entering Sunday's regular season finale at Wichita, before the Central Hockey League playoffs start the following weekend.
Allen scored three goals in the space of nearly three minutes of the first period for a 3-0 lead after twenty minutes. Liam Huculak, judd Blackwater, and Justin DaCosta (power play) each netted goals for the Americans late in the first frame for the advantage.
Allen took a 4-0 lead in the second period before the RiverKings first scored. Dave Bonk of the Americans scored his 20th goal of the season exactly four minutes into the middle period.
But with Chris Richards in the penalty box later in the second period, Matt Boyd fed a breakout pass to Louis Dumont, who blasted the puck past Allen goaltender Chris Whitley (24-10-2) for a shorthanded goal at 9:29 to get the RiverKings within 4-1. The goal was Dumont's 15th of the season and his sixth shorthanded goal of the year.
The Mississippi rally continued in the third period, starting with a power play goal from Derek Landmesser at 9:32, the RiverKings' second goal of the night.
Chris Auger then got a feed from Chris Richards and scored shorthanded at 16:17 to get within one at 4-3. That goal would be Auger's 14th of the year and his fourth shorthanded marker.
Matt Boyd then was able to force overtime for the RiverKings with 43 seconds remaing in regulation with his seventh goal of the year, forcing it past Whitley with the RiverKings having pulled goaltender Larry Sterling (12-13-3) for an extra attacker.
The game went to a shootout after a scoreless overtime period, and it was there that Sterling stopped all three Allen tries, while Matt Summers (game-winner), Richards and Auger all scored on Whitley for the victory.
Both teams scored once on the power play, with the RiverKings 1-for-3 and the Americans 1-for-8. Allen out shot the RiverKings 36-34 in the contest.
The RiverKings wrap up the regular season tomorrow afternoon against the Wichita Thunder at 5:05 PM in Wichita. Broadcast coverage on Sports 56, WHBQ-AM and CHL-TV begins at 4:50 PM with Bob Bakken on the call. An Away Game Watch Party will take place at the Southaven Buffalo Wild Wings to watch the game.
