March 26, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Kansas City Mavericks News Release
AREDO, Texas -The Missouri Mavericks fell to the Laredo Bucks, 2-1, Saturday night at Laredo Entertainment Center. Bucks' goaltender Torrie Jung stopped 33 of 34 shots and beat the Mavericks' in their regular season finale. Missouri closed out their second season with a 37-23-6 record, but the Mavericks must wait to determine who their first round opponent will be in the playoffs. The Mavericks will host their first two playoff games Friday, April 1 and Saturday, April 2. Tickets are available for both games.
"I was excited to have that type of game before we head into the playoffs," said Mavericks' Head Coach Scott Hillman. "We had tons of great chances, we battled back and it was a good tune-up game. We had the effort, just not the goals."
"It's been a great season," added Hillman. "It's huge to have home ice and we are excited to see our fans this weekend."
Laredo's two goals in the opening 4:15 of the game were enough as the Mavericks were only able to get one puck past Jung. Daniel Koger opened the scoring just 1:23 into the first period on assists from Benjamin Dieude-Fauvel and Neil Trimm. The Bucks made it a 2-0 game at the 4:15 mark on a goal by longtime Bucks' defenseman Serge Dube. He was assisted by Trimm and Jeff Bes, and the Bucks held on to the two-goal lead through the first 20 minutes of action.
The Mavericks cut into Laredo's lead early in the second period when Brandon Coccimiglio connected on the power play at the 3:34 mark. Toby Lafrance and Shawn Fensel earned the assists on the goal, but it proved to be the final goal of the game. Missouri peppered Bucks' goaltender Torrie Jung with 26 shots in the first two periods, but the Bucks goaltender was equal to the task on 25 of those shots.
In the third period, the Mavericks earned a couple power play opportunities, but couldn't score the equalizer.
The Mavericks finished with 34 shots and Jung stopped 33 for the win as he kept the Bucks playoff hopes alive. Mavericks' goaltender Gerry Festa was equally as impressive stopping 28 of 30 shots in the loss.
Missouri will now head home and get ready for the 2011 Ray Miron Presidents' Cup Playoffs. The Mavericks seeding and opponent will be determined Sunday after the final games of the regular season have been played.
The Mavericks will host their first two playoff games on Friday, April 1 and Saturday, April 2. The team will host a tailgate party before each game outside the south entrance to Independence Events Center starting at 4 p.m. each day. Tickets are available for both games at the Independence Events Center Box Office, by calling (800) 745-3000 or visiting www.Ticketmaster.com. Visit www.MissouriMavericks.com for more information.
