Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release
HIDALGO, Texas- The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees (25-35-6) clinched a playoff spot thanks to their 5-4 victory over the Texas Brahmas on Saturday night. The Bees initially trailed 4-0 after one period of play but stormed back scoring five straight goals, including four in the second period. Brett Clouthier scored the game winning goal for the Bees in the third.
BOX SCORE
The Texas Brahmas came out flying score three goals before the game was six minutes mark. Derek Matheson scored an unassisted goal at 1:26 and just 1:01 later Jason Deitsch scored his first of the game increasing the Brahmas lead to two goals.
The Brahmas weren't done for the first period as Dylan Stanley found the back of the net at 5:53 of the first period.
Things would quiet for the Bees for most of the rest of the first period including numerous quality opportunities that were turned away by netminder Steve Christie. At the end of the period Texas would add their final tally of the period as Jason Deitsch scored his second of the game with 55.9 seconds left on the game clock.
With the playoffs in their sites the Bees would rally to tie the game at four goals apiece after two periods of play scoring four unanswered goals.
Aaron Lewicki started the Bees rally at the 1:42 mark of the second period with a shot rising over the shoulder of Christie. Dan Gendur and Tomas Klempa picked up the helpers on the goal.
At 10:53 of the second the Bees cut the lead to two goals as Dominic D'Amour ripped a shot from the point while the Bees were on a two man advantage that found the back of the net with significant traffic in front.
The Bees continued their scoring streak as Brett Wilson scored his 15th of the season at 15:56 of the second. Bo Cheesman came into the zone and ripped a shot that was turned away by Christie but Wilson picked up the rebound and put it to the back of the net.
The Bees rally was complete at 16:42 of the second as Dan Gendur scored his first goal since a stint on the injured reserve list. The Bees were once again on the man-advantage and after taking a Campbell feed walked the puck to the top of the circles and let go a slap shot that hit the back of the net.
In the second period the Bees outshot the Brahmas by a 16-5 mark.
The Killer Bees would score the only goal they needed to win the game in the third period as Brett Clouthier scored his third goal of the season. Clouthier skated the puck to the top of the circles and took an innocent looking shot towards the net that deflected off a Texas defender past Steve Christie who never made it to the butterfly.
The Texas Brahmas apparently tied the game with only 3.8 seconds left however the game clock was not started on time and after deliberations referee Jon McIssac waved off the goal and ended the game.
The Killer Bees now await their playoff date with the Allen Americans. The series will start this Thursday in Allen at 7:30 p.m. Game two is Friday and then the series shifts to the Valley on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. as the Bees host the Amerks for game three. Game four will also be at the Hive if necessary on Monday night.
