March 26, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
ODESSA, TX - The Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs fell behind early and couldn't manage a comeback in a 4-2 loss to the Odessa Jackalopes in the regular season final Saturday night at the Ector County Coliseum. The second-place Mudbugs will now prepare for their Opening Round playoff series against the #7 Arizona Sundogs, which begins next Friday night at the CenturyTel Center.
Jeff Kyrzakos scored both goals for Bossier-Shreveport, who finished 0 for 6 on the powerplay. Odessa went 2 for 5 with the man-advantage and also scored a shorthanded goal to win the special teams battle. John DeCaro stopped 21 of 25 shots in the loss as the âBugs outshot the Jacks 28-25.
Odessa outshot the Mudbugs 13-7 in the opening period and jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of powerplay goals. First Luke Stauffacher put a rebound past John DeCaro just 1:30 into the game to put the home team on top. The Jackalopes extended the lead at 13:49 when Matt Gens re-directed a point shot off a Mudbug and into the net as Odessa went 2 for 2 on the powerplay in the first stanza.
Bossier-Shreveport got on the board right away in the second period on a nice passing play as Shawn Limpright and Travis Clayton combined to get the puck to Jeff Kyrzakos, who rifled it into the top corner to cut the Odessa lead in half. The Jacks regained the two-goal edge a few minutes later however when Mike Lesperance scored on a shorthanded breakaway to make it 3-1 through two periods.
Sebastien Thinel tapped in a pass from Todd Robinson at 6:33 to put the Jackalopes up 4-1, but Jeff Kyrzakos got that goal back on a blast from the point through traffic less than two minutes later to make it 4-2. The Mudbugs had three more powerplay chances in the third, but could not solve Joel Martin again to draw closer in the 4-2 defeat.
John DeCaro (20-12-1) saw his personal four-game winning streak snapped, while Joel Martin (11-9-0) earned the win with 26 saves.
With the regular season now concluded, the Mudbugs will have five days off before beginning their playoff run with a best-of-five Opening Round series against Arizona. Game 1 between the âBugs and Sundogs is set for Friday at 7:05 pm at the CenturyTel Center, with Game 2 to follow on Saturday night at the CTC as well.
