Evansville Otters News Release
August 5, 2009, Rockford, IL - A night after falling to the Rockford Riverhawks 10-1, the Otters were upended 14-2 Wednesday at Road Ranger Stadium.
The Otters, just as they did in Tuesday's opener, scored first. Javier Brown came around from second base on catcher Ben Blumenthal's errant throw to first base trying to cut down Greg Alexander. The âHawks answered with four runs of their own in the bottom of the first with three straight run scoring hits with two outs. Brandon Cohen doubled in a run and Ross McCoy doubled in two before Doug Sanders singled in one.
Rockford extended the lead to 6-1 in the fourth inning on back-to-back RBI doubles from Caleb Fields and Jason James. Otters' first baseman Matt Schneider hit his first professional home run to lead off the fifth inning, a blast to right-centerfield that cut to deficit to 6-2.
The Riverhawks pulled away for good in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring six times. The highlight was Brandon Cohen's grand slam to centerfield. Cohen would strike again in the seventh inning with a two-run shot, his fifth home run of the year. Cohen finished 3-for-6 with two home runs, a double, and seven RBI.
âHawks starter Kyle Wright (10-1) tossed his sixth complete game of the year. He allowed only one earned run on seven hits while striking out nine. Otters' starter John Ducey (2-7) lasted 3 1/3 innings, surrendering six earned runs on eight hits, five of them doubles. Ducey walked five and struck out only one. Five days ago against the Riverhawks, Ducey allowed only one run on three hits in six innings while striking out a career high ten. The Otters will attempt to salvage the series Thursday at 7:05pm CDT.
