ROBINSON'S BLAST PROPELS RASCALS PAST MINERS 7-5
O'FALLON, MO - Scott Robinson blasted a three run homer over the right field wall in the fifth to propel the Rascals past the Miners 7-5 Wednesday night at T.R. Hughes Ballpark. River City tied up the season series at four apiece with the victory.
The Rascals (38-29) put a three spot up on Ryan Bird (7-5), who lost for the fifth time in his last six starts. JoJo Batten singled and Ryan Wehrle reached on a pop up that Bird dropped and then threw into centerfield, attempting to get Batten at second base. Robinson followed with his 12th home run to put River City up for good at 7-4.
The Miners (36-30) erased a four run River City lead with three runs of their own in the fifth. Landon Camp singled to left with one out and went all the way to third on a Ryan Groth throwing error. Chris Crescenzi singled for the second time to plate Camp to cut the deficit to 4-2. Will Block doubled with two outs after a Jereme Milons strikeout and Stephen Holdren singled to tie the game at four against Stephen Flake (2-3).
Flake was done after 5.1 innings, allowing an Adam Hale solo shot in the sixth with one out. The former Windy City hurler surrendered five runs on eight hits with five strikeouts to earn his first win with the Rascals.
River City jumped out against Bird with two tallies in the first. Batten reached on a fielder's choice after Scott Houin led off with a single. After a Wehrle walk, Robinson delivered an RBI single to center to put the Rascals up 1-0. Bird walked two of the next three hitters, including Groth with the bases loaded to force in the second run.
Wehrle would walk again to start the third, his second of three free passes on the night, and would score on a Chad Maddox double. Maddox would advance to third on a Chris Colton groundout and scored on a straight steal of home to give the Rascals a 4-0 lead.
Bird was tagged with his fifth loss, allowing seven runs (five earned) on six hits with a career high five walks and only one strikeout.
Maddox finished with two doubles to push his Frontier League leading tally to 25. Robinson had a pair of hits and four runs batted in, including the three run bomb. Batten was 2-4 with two runs scored and pushed his hitting streak to seven games.
The Rascals bullpen combined for 3.2 innings and one hit with six strikeouts between Tony Marsala, Brent Solich and Jason Lowey. Lowey threw a perfect ninth inning for his 17th save, which leads the Frontier League. River City wraps up their regular season home schedule with Southern Illinois tomorrow night in the rubber matchup of the three game contest. Josh Lowey (5-2) will oppose Danny Zeffiro (3-3) on the mound. Game time is slated for 7:05 p.m. at T.R. Hughes Ballpark.
