Lake Erie Crushers News Release

Washington, PA - The Lake Erie Crushers needed extra innings on Wednesday night, but they were finally able to knock off the Washington Wild Things, winning in 11 innings by the final of 7-5 at Consol Energy Park.

The Crushers took their first lead of the game in the top of the 11th with one out as Jodam Rivera hit an RBI double to score Eddie Tisdale from second. Drew Saylor added an insurance run with an RBI single to put Lake Erie up 7-5. J.J. Pacella pitched a scoreless bottom of the 11th to earn his fourth save of the season and his second in as many nights.

Lake Erie spent most of the evening trying to battle back as they fell behind Washington by as many as three runs during the course of the game. The Wild Things scored twice in the first to get the early advantage and then tacked on two more runs on an Ernie Banks homer in the third to take a 4-1 lead. Following Banks' blast, the Crushers scored three times in the fourth inning to tie the ballgame. Andrew Davis and Gordon Gronkowski hit back to back run-scoring doubles, and an error on Washington shortstop Brett Grandstrand led to another run. After the Wild Things took a 5-4 lead in the seventh, Lake Erie battled back to tie the game in the eighth as Davis scored on another Grandstrand error.

Washington had a chance to win the game in the ninth with runners at second and third with one out. Arden McWilliams caught Ernie Banks' fly ball and delivered a perfect strike to the plate to gun down Wild Things runner Matt Davis to end the threat. Ronnie Morales worked three shutout innings in relief to earn his second straight win, Washington reliever Justin Edwards took the loss. "A lot of little things combined to help us win this game," said Crushers manager John Massarelli. "Morales' performance was a big contributor as well as some great plays on defense."

The Crushers are now 39-28 on the season and will wrap up their three game series against Washington on Thursday night at 7:05 P.M. Jorge Charry will get the start against Zach Groh.
