Washington Wild Things News Release
Washington, PA - The Washington Wild Things (32-36), presented by Washington Federal Savings Bank, fell to the Lake Erie Crushers (39-28) 7-5 in 11 innings Wednesday night at CONSOL Energy Park.
In what turned out to be pitching duel, the game got off to a fast start offensively. The Wild Things took an early lead over the Crushers, going up 4-1 through three innings. Two big hits did the damage; an RBI triple by outfielder Chris Sidick and a two-run homerun by first baseman Ernie Banks, his 19th of the season.
The Crushers tied the game up an inning later scoring three on three hits, but were given plenty of help thanks to two Wild Things' errors. The duel was on.
The teams exchanged hit for hit, run for run and strikeout for strikeout; then the Crushers came up to bat in the 11th. Three hits later, and the Wild Things were looking up at a two-run deficit, trailing 7-5. That would be all the Crushers would need to earn the series victory.
Sidick and designated hitter Jacob Dempsey led the Wild Things' offense, each collecting two hits on the night and an RBI a piece. Sidick reached base three times in the game. Outfielder Josh Blackstock also reached base three times, including two singles. Along with his homerun, Banks added three RBIs to the offense.
Starting pitcher Jason Neitz pitched six innings, giving up four runs on eight hits and struck out six. Crushers' starter Cordoza Tucker also went six innings, giving up four runs on eight hits and struck out five. Neither pitcher figured into the decision. Reliever Justin Edwards (3-4) took the loss. Crushers' reliever J.J. Pacella (3-0) pitched a scoreless 11th to earn the win. Wild Things' pitchers combined to strikeout 12 hitters in the game.
The series wraps up Thursday evening. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. Pre-game coverage on WJPA 95.3 FM begins at 6:55. The Wild Things are in town through Sunday, hosting the Kalamazoo Kings over the weekend. Tickets for remaining games on the home stand are available at the CONSOL Energy Park box office.
