Florence Y'alls News Release
FLORENCE, KY - The long ball was used early in both ends of the double header as the Kalamazoo Kings won two over the Florence Freedom Wednesday night at Champion Window Field.
Josh Short's three run homer in the first inning of game one propelled the Kings to a 7-3 win. After jumping out 3-0, the Freedom never caught the Kings as Joe DiPietro (6-5) picked up the win.
Jay Johnson went 3-4 for the Freedom with two RBIs in the loss. Johnson would be heard from again later in game two.
Demetrius Banks started and threw 111 pitches in five innings for Florence. Banks (4-4) took the loss allowing five runs, four earned on five hits.
In game two, Kyle Higgins and Joe Ramos hit back-to-back homers off Preston Vancil to lead off the first inning. The Kings carried that momentum to an 8-4 win.
Justin Pickett doubled home Tim Grogan in the bottom of the first inning to cut the lead to 2-1. But Vancil walked the first two to begin the top of the second and both later came in to score to make it 4-1 Kings.
Brad Hough (8) turned it back into a one run game with a two-run homer in the bottom of the second.
The score stayed 4-3 until the sixth when the Kings put up two runs in consecutive innings to ice the game away which included Higgins second homer of the game.
Johnson (3) would hit a solo blast for the Freedom off Tommy Mejia in the ninth. Vancil (2-1) took the loss for the Freedom.
