RiverDogs Split Double Dip 1-6, 1-0; Close in on Attendance Record

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Charleston RiverDogs lost the first game of Monday's doubleheader 6-1 to the Asheville Tourists, but bounced back to win the second game 1-0 in front of 3,470 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

GAME ONE: The RiverDogs could not recover after giving up runs in each of the first three innings of the doubleheader's first game, as they fell 6-1 to the Tourists.

Charleston (27-35 second half, 61-71 overall) trailed 3-0 after two and a half innings before getting on the board in the bottom of the third. Devyn Bolasky hit a one-out infield single and stole second base. Vince Conde followed with a single, and Angel Aguilar drove in Bolasky with a sacrifice fly to right field.

The Tourists (36-25, 68-63) increased their 3-1 lead in the top of the sixth. Max White drew a one-out walk, advanced to second on a groundout, and stole third. He came home to score on an RBI single by Yonathan Daza.

Asheville broke the game open in the top of the seventh. Roberto Ramos walked with the bases loaded, and Wes Rogers ripped an RBI single into left field to give the visitors a 6-1 advantage.

Shane Hoelscher drove in two of the first three runs for the Tourists with RBI doubles in the first and third innings. Luis Jean drove in Wes Rogers in the second on a groundout to short.

Daris Vargas (0-1) took the loss in his first start with the RiverDogs. He gave up four runs (three earned) on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Sam Howard (11-9) pitched six innings for Asheville and only allowed one run on four hits. He struck out six batters and leads the South Atlantic League with 117.

GAME TWO: Justin Kamplain (5-14) threw a 6 1/3 shutout innings in the second game of the doubleheader as Charleston edged out a 1-0 victory.

For the second game in a row, the RiverDogs (28-35, 62-71) scored their lone run in the bottom of the third inning. Griff Gordon was hit by a pitch, and Aguilar was hit by one as well two batters later.

After Bo Thompson's fly out, Isaias Tejeda came through with a two-out RBI single to center field. Gordon slid in safely to avoid the tag from the catcher Robbie Perkins on a close play at the plate.

The RiverDogs preserved their one-run lead despite several threats by the Tourists (36-26, 68-64). In the top of the sixth, Forrest Wall legged out a one-out triple on a line drive to right field. The next batter, Hoelscher, hit a ground ball to the shortstop Angel Aguilar with the infield playing in. Aguilar threw Wall out at the plate attempting to tie the game at 1.

The next inning, Daza doubled down the right field line with one out. Brody Koerner entered the game and retired the next two batters to earn his third save of the season. Daza was stranded on third base after advancing on Cesar Galvez's groundout.

Helmis Rodriguez (8-8) threw a complete game for the Tourists with all six innings pitched. However, he gave up the one run in the third and took the loss.

BALLPARK FUN: Fans were treated to 14 innings of baseball at The Joe on Monday night following Sunday's rainout. The RiverDogs celebrated Monday Night Baseball for the final time this season. The Sertoma Cheerleaders made a special appearance and did a pregame routine on the field. Then, they all lined up by the inflatable Charlie T. RiverDog head in right field and gave the players high fives as they entered the field. Many fans stuck around for both games of the doubleheader and cheered the RiverDogs on to a victory in the second game.

COMING UP: The RiverDogs continue their five-game series against Asheville Sunday at 5:05 p.m. Charleston will RHP Matt Wotherspoon (4-3, 3.98 ERA) to the mound against RHP Ryan Castellani (2-7, 4.40 ERA) for the Tourists.
