Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, Md. -- The Delmarva Shorebirds shut down the Hickory Crawdads for the third straight night, finishing a 1-0 victory on Monday. Francisco Jimenez and Tanner Scott held the offense in check again, while Elier Leyva homered for the game's only run.
The Delmarva pitching staff has found its groove late in the season against the Crawdads' offense. After 3-0 and 2-1 wins over the weekend, Francisco Jimenez continued the domination on Monday. The 20-year-old spun seven scoreless frames in the start, tying his career-high in innings pitched. Jimenez only allowed two hits and a hit-by-pitch, while striking out three batters.
Tanner Scott finished off the Shorebirds' second shutout of the series with two scoreless innings. Scott blew away batters with his high-90s fastball, punching out four batters. After a double by Carlos Arroyo, Scott stranded the tying run on second base in the ninth for his second save.
The Shorebirds' only offense came courtesy of outfielder Elier Leyva. Early on, Delmarva missed a scoring chance after a leadoff double by Leyva in the second inning. In the seventh, Leyva crushed a solo home run off Pedro Payano for the 1-0 lead, his first long ball since May 22nd. The Crawdads' starter had retired 12 consecutive batters until the Leyva at-bat.
Jimenez earned his first win as a Shorebird with the seven shutout frames, while Scott picked up his second save. The Shorebirds recorded their 12th shutout victory of the season, and their second in the last three games. Delmarva improved to 67-64 on the season, their most wins since 2008. The Shorebirds leapfrogged Hickory in the second half standings for 3rd place at 34-29.
Delmarva already wrapped up the series win, and now will try for a four-game winning streak on Tuesday. Right-hander Dennis Torres (0-1, 6.43) takes the bump against Hickory southpaw Yohander Mendez (3-2, 1.86). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
