Hickory Crawdads News Release
Salisbury, MD - A struggling Hickory Crawdads offense took another step in the wrong direction Monday night, as the 'Dads were shutout for the second time in three games against the Delmarva Shorebirds resulting in a 1-0 loss at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
The lack of offense spoiled a superb performance by Crawdads starting pitcher Pedro Payano, who tossed 6.2 innings with 7 strikeouts while allowing his only run on a one out, solo home run by Shorebirds right fielder Elier Leyva in the 7th. Reliever Jeffery Springs was nearly as dominant while making his team debut, with 1.1 scoreless frames including 3 Ks out of the bullpen.
The 'Dads have now dropped the first three games in their series in Delmarva while scoring one total run on 14 combined hits over the 27 innings played.
Neither team could sniff the run column during the first two-thirds of the game, with Payano and Delmarva starter Francisco Jimenez trading scoreless innings. The Crawdads lone early threat came on a two-out double by Eduard Pinto in the 2nd that also saw the runner move to third base on a balk, but Jimenez worked out of the jam by inducing a groundout from Jose Cardona to end the inning.
The 'Birds meanwhile got a leadoff double by Leyva followed by a subsequent walk to Riley Palmer to put two on with no outs to start the bottom of the second. Payano wiggled out of trouble following a visit to the mound by Hickory pitching coach Oscar Marin however, with three straight outs to leave two men in scoring position.
Payano would go on to retire 12 straight batters from the 3rd through the first out of the 7th before Leyva lined an 0-1 pitch over the wall in left to score the only run of the game and give Delmarva the 1-0 win.
Jimenez (1-0) earned the win for the Shorebirds with 7 shutout innings pitched on two hits, no walks, and three strikeouts. Payano (3-1) was the hard-luck loser, while Delmarva reliever Tanner Scott (2) picked up the save with two scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
Cardona paced the 'Dads bats with a 2-4 game, while Carlos Arroyo finished 1-4 with a double and Pinto went 1-3 with a double.
The Crawdads (77-54/33-30) will play the Shorebirds (67-64/34-29) again on Tuesday in game four of the 5-game series, with first pitch set for 7:05 pm.
