Hagerstown Suns News Release

HAGERSTOWN, MD - The Hagerstown Suns (29-34, 64-67) blew a three-run lead for the second straight game on Monday night, falling to the Kannapolis Intimidators (28-34, 63-68) by a final of 6-4. The win was the fourth in a row for Kannapolis, matching a season-high, while the Suns matched a season-high in losing their fourth straight game.

The Intimidators took control of the game in the top of the seventh. Center fielder Hunter Jones drew a two-out walk, and then stole second to get himself into scoring position. Right fielder Louie Lechich followed with a line drive single into center field, driving in Jones to tie the game at 4-4. Next stepped 1B Alexander Simon to the plate, and he crushed a line drive double to right, bringing home Lechich all the way from first to put Kannapolis on top to stay at 5-4.

The Intimidators began erasing their three-run deficit the inning prior. Lechich began the top of the sixth by drawing a walk, and Simon then hit an infield single to third. Another walk loaded the bases with no one out and chased starting LHP Connor Bach from the game. After the pitching change LF Mason Robbins grounded into a 4-6-3 double play, which plated a run. Third baseman Cody Daily followed by hitting a ground rule double to left, driving in Simon from third and making it a 4-3 ballgame.

The Suns built their early advantage by scoring one run each in the first, third, fourth, and fifth. In the first 1B Jose Marmolejos brought home a run with a sacrifice fly to center field. He produced another run in the third again with a sacrifice fly, giving him his league-leading 81st RBI of the season. In between Marmolejos' two sacrifice flies Kannapolis picked up its first run in the top of the third when Simon reached on a fielder's choice on a ground ball hit to Bach that he threw home, but not in time to get Jones who had taken off with contact from third.

In the fourth inning Hagerstown added to its lead when 2B Bryan Mejia hit a one-out triple to center field. He then scored when the next batter, LF Matthew Page, singled to right to make it 3-1 Suns. Hagerstown's final run crossed the plate the next inning thanks to an RBI single by Mejia.

Kannapolis was able to set the final margin by plating a run in the ninth. It was an unearned run as catcher Ryan Plourde scored on a missed catch error by Suns RHP Deion Williams. RHP Tommy Peterson (0-1) suffered the loss for Hagerstown in his Suns debut. He threw two innings in relief and gave up two earned runs on three hits and one walk while striking out two. RHP Jacob Morris (5-3) earned the win in relief for Kannapolis. He threw 1.1 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and two walks. LHP Ryan Riga picked up his first save of the year by keeping the Suns off the board for the final 2.2 innings.

These teams will continue their five-game series at Municipal Stadium with game four on Tuesday, September 1. The Suns will send RHP Andrew Lee (3-0) to the mound for his fourth start and ninth appearance with the Suns this season. He will square off against RHP Zach Thompson (3-6) for Kannapolis. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm. For tickets call 301-791-6266 or go to www.hagerstownsuns.com.
