CHARLESTON, SC - Jairo Heredia allowed just one hit in 5.0 scoreless innings to lead the Charleston RiverDogs over the Hickory Crawdads, 6-2, in front 4,232 fans in South Atlantic League action at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park Thursday night.
With the victory Charleston improves to 24-30 and wins consecutive games for the first time since May 26-27, while the Crawdads fall to 33-22.
In his fifth start back with the RiverDogs since being demoted from High-A Tampa, Heredia (2-1) gave up an infield single to Miguel Velazquez in the first for his only blemish and did not allow a runner into scoring position. The No. 29 prospect in the Yankees organization, according to Baseball America, walked two and fanned six in the victory.
Charleston scored two unearned runs in the first against Matt Thompson to claim a 2-0 lead. J.R. Murphy reached on an error, moved to second on Jimmy Paredes' walk and scored on a Luke Murton RBI single that advanced Paredes to third when the ball was misplayed in the outfield. Zoilo Almonte proceeded to reach on a RBI fielder's choice to score Paredes.
Two more runs were plated in the second via Murphy's RBI single and Paredes' sacrifice fly for a 4-0 advantage.
Hector Rabago's sacrifice fly in the third upped the margin to 5-0, while Almonte knocked a two-out RBI double to centerfield for a 6-0 score.
Hickory cut the deficit to 6-1 in the sixth on Cristian Santana's RBI single. Travis Adair's sacrifice fly in the eighth made the count 6-2, but Charleston's Dickson Marquez stranded the bases loaded to finish the frame.
Kyle Higashioka had three of Charleston's 10 base hits, while Murphy went 2-for-5 with a RBI and two runs scored.
Thompson (4-3) dropped his second straight decision, permitting five runs on seven hits in 3.0 innings.
The final game of this series is scheduled for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch on Friday night. Charleston sends right-hander Jose Ramirez (2-3, 2.57) to the mound, while Hickory counters with right-hander Neil Ramirez (5-3, 4.80).
