Rome, GA - Brian Irving gave his Augusta GreenJackets 5.1 solid innings in his first start of the season as the Jackets held on for a 4-3 win over the Rome Braves on Thursday night.

Using only five pitches each to retire the side in the first and second innings, Irving (3-1) got the win in his first start of the year after making 15 prior appearances out of the bullpen. He induced double play balls in the third and fifth innings and left the game in the sixth after turning in his longest outing of the season.

The GreenJackets gave Irving support in the first inning after Chris Dominguez singled in the first to score Nick Liles from second after a double. The two-bagger was Liles' third in as many nights. In the fifth, with Daniel Cook at third and one out, Juan Martinez laid down a perfect suicide squeeze bunt to put the Jackets up 2-0.

Irving began to tire in the sixth through and departed with runners at first and second. Ryan Verdugo allowed a Cory Harrilchak base hit to right field to score one run. Kyle Rose tried to score from second for Rome to tie the game, running through a stop sign to do so. Cook's throw from right was on the money to retire Rose at the plate and preserve the one-run lead.

Irving departed after allowing a run on five hits with no walks and two strikeouts in his 5.1 inning stint.

Augusta added to the lead in the seventh on a two-run single from Evan Crawford and Verdugo held down the fort until passing the baton in the ninth to Devan Kline, who allowed back-to-back singles to open the frame. After walking Robert Hefflinger to load the bases, Kline struck out Jordan Kreke but the third strike was a wild pitch that allowed a run to score.

Jose Casilla came on in relief of Kline to induce a sacrifice fly that made it a one-run game and sent the tying run to third with two outs. Casilla would fan Jake Hanson to end the game and earn Casilla his first save of the year.

Brett DeVall (2-3) got the loss for the Braves in his longest outing of the year - seven innings. He allowed four runs - three earned - on eight hits with no walks and three strikeouts.

Kyle Vazquez (4-2, 3.19) takes the mound for the GreenJackets as Augusta tries to take three of four from the Braves and even the season series at four games apiece between the two clubs. Cory Rasmus (3-3, 2.72) will oppose as Rome tries to earn the series split. First pitch from Rome will come at 7:05 p.m. with the pregame action beginning at 2:50 p.m. on WRDW AM 1630, www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com.
