The Baltimore Orioles Player Development Department announced on Wednesday that Shorebirds starting pitcher Nathan Moreau has been named the Organizational Pitcher of the Month for May. The honor comes a day after Moreau was named the South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week. The 23-year old posted a 1-0 record with a stellar 0.36 ERA. The award takes into account all pitchers in the Orioles minor league system.

Moreau made seven appearances (three starts) during the month. In 25.0 innings pitched, he allowed just 10 hits while striking out 33 batters and walking just five. The South Atlantic League batted a paltry .122 against him in May.

The University of Georgia product tossed 14 consecutive scoreless innings in his first five outings of the month. During the stretch, he allowed only four hits and struck out 22 batters.

Moreau transitioned into a starting role on May 18 against West Virginia. He hurled four hitless and scoreless innings. Moreau retired 12 straight batters after issuing a lead-off walk to the first batter, Evan Chambers. He also fanned seven batters over four innings.

His other signature start during May was his most recent against the Lakewood BlueClaws on May 28. In six innings, he allowed just one hit and no runs. The lone hit was a bunt single in the first inning by Leandro Castro. He fanned a season high eight batters.

The 11th round pick of the Orioles in 2008 had the lowest ERA (0.36) amongst all pitchers in the Orioles system. He also finished second in the chain in strikeouts (33).

The Orioles also announced that 2009 Shorebirds first baseman, Joe Mahoney, was named the Organizational Player of the Month. Mahoney hit .314 with a home run and 12 RBIs in May.

Moreau is scheduled to make his next start on Thursday (June 3) night at 7:00 p.m. against the Greensboro Grasshoppers.
