CHARLESTON, SC - The Charleston RiverDogs jumped out in front early and held on for a 6-2 win over the Hickory Crawdads, before 4,232 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park on Thursday night. Despite the loss, the 'Dads remain two games ahead of the Lakewood BlueClaws in the Northern Division.
After getting a quick first out in the bottom of the first, Hickory starter RHP Matt Thompson (4-3, 3.51 ERA) had DH JR Murphy reach on a fielding error by 2B Edwin Garcia and walked SS Jimmy Paredes. 1B Luke Murton then singled to left to bring in Murphy from second. One batter later, RF Zoilo Almonte grounded into a fielders choice to score Paredes from third for an early, 2-0, RiverDogs advantage.
Charleston (24-30) doubled its lead in the bottom of the second. 2B Kelvin Castro drew a one-out walk and was pushed to second on a single by CF Slade Heathcott. Murphy then singled to bring in Castro from second with Heathcott taking third. Paredes followed with a sac fly out to to left to bring in Heathcott and increase the Crawdads (33-22) deficit to 4-0.
The RiverDogs tacked on single runs in both the third and fourth innings to take a 6-0 lead, before the 'Dads began their comeback effort.
With one out in the top of the sixth, RF Jared Prince drew a walk from Charleston reliever RHP Ryan Acosta. CF Miguel Velazquez moved Prince to second on a groundout and DH Cristian Santana followed with an RBI double to left to plate Prince and cut the deficit to 6-1.
The Crawdads rallied yet again the top of the eighth. Prince and Velazquez both singled to put runners at first and second with one out. 3B Matt West then drew a walk to load the bases for LF Travis Adair. Adair lofted a sac fly to left to bring in Prince from third, but the 'Dads were unable to push any more runs across, capping the scoring at 6-2.
RHP Jairo Heredia (2-1, 5.08 ERA) picked up the win for the RiverDogs, with five scoreless innings in which he allowed one hit and two walks while fanning six. Thompson took the loss for Hickory, allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits and two walks with a strikeout.
