RiverDogs Bounce Back, Silence 'Dads 3-0

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Lefty Jordan Montgomery fired six scoreless innings and the Charleston RiverDogs recovered from last night's loss to shut out the Hickory Crawdads 3-0 in front of 4,220 fans, and dogs, Sunday night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park. The RiverDogs have now tossed a league-high four shutouts in 2015.

Charleston (15-9) got on the board early against Hickory's starting pitcher Collin Wiles. The RiverDogs loaded the bases and then Connor Spencer walked to drive in Ty McFarland from third base. The run was all the RiverDogs would need, as Montgomery went six innings and held Hickory (16-7) scoreless on just four hits.

Charleston added insurance runs in the fifth and sixth. Devyn Bolasky hit a double with one out in the fifth, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a base hit by Jorge Mateo. The RiverDogs loaded the bases again in the sixth and scored on another RBI walk. Brandon Thomas drew the walk and picked up the RBI as Angel Aguilar came home to score.

Sean Carley and Joe Harvey slammed the door on the Crawdads in relief of Montgomery and preserved the shutout. Hickory left runners in scoring position in each of the last five innings and left 11 men on base for the second night in a row.

Montgomery (3-2) snapped his two-game losing streak and picked up his third win of the season. Wiles (3-1) took his first loss of the season after three starts without allowing a run to begin the year. Harvey earned his fifth save in five chances with an inning and one-third of scoreless relief.

BALLPARK FUN: Sunday evening at The Joe was extremely eventful. It was the first Dog Day, as many friendly pups roamed and barked around the ballpark. Many of the kids in attendance invaded Shoeless Joe's Hill and wore their face paint proudly. Sunday was Jewish Heritage Day at The Joe. Ellen Miriam Brandwein sang a beautiful rendition of the Israeli National Anthem, there was Jewish trivia with a local Rabbi after the 4th inning, and Charlie T. RiverDog was the elevated participant in a between-innings chair dance.

COMING UP: The RiverDogs conclude their series with the Crawdads Monday night at 7:05 p.m. at The Joe. Charleston will send RHP David Palladino (0-1, 5.06 ERA) to the mound against RHP Kelvin Vasquez (0-1, 2.84 ERA).
