Claws Take Back-And-Forth Game Sunday

Savannah, GA - The Lakewood BlueClaws won a back-and-forth game 6-4 over the Savannah Sand Gnats Sunday afternoon at Historic Grayson Stadium, their third straight win over the Gnats. Savannah has now lost four in a row and five of six on the team's seven-game homestead.

Lakewood (13-11) scored first, with a run in the top of the fourth against Savannah starter Matires Arias (2-1, 3.47). Arias came into today's game having not allowed a run in 8.1 innings pitched, Lakewood's run ended the streak at 11.1 IP.

The Gnats (7-16) answered right back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth for a 2-1 lead. Wuilmer Becerra brought home C Tomas Nido with a double down the left field line to plate the first run. DH Vicente Lupo followed that with a RBI single that chased home Jon Leroux who had walked.

Lakewood scored twice off Arias in the top of the sixth to establish a short-lived 3-2 lead.

The Gnats tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, Becerra doubled and then scored on 3B Pedro Perez's RBI single.

The BlueClaws took a 5-3 lead in the top of the seventh off a tiring Arias and reliever Carlos Valdez. Shortstop Malquin Canelo lined a double down the left field line on Arias' 91st and final pitch of the afternoon to chase home Derek Campbell with the 'Claws fourth run. The Sand Gnats turned to Valdez out of the bullpen who promptly surrounded a single to left fielder Cord Sandberg that sent home Canelo for the fifth Lakewood run.

Arias allowed five runs, all earned, on seven hits in 6.1 innings to take his first loss of the year.

Both teams scored a run in the ninth to establish the game's final margin.

Becerra finished 2-for-4 with two doubles. He has now hit safely in five straight games, a personal season-high.

The Sand Gnats and BlueClaws will conclude their four-game series tomorrow at 7:05 PM. RHP Scarlyn Reyes (0-3, 3.86) will get the start for the Gnats, while RHP Ricardo Pinto (2-0, 2.42) will start for Lakewood in the finale. It will be another Kroger Dollar Monday, where $1 general admission tickets are available in The Savannah Morning News, online at savannah.com, or by using a $1 coupon found at participating Kroger Locations. Hot dogs, chips, small sodas, and select beers will also be $1 each. Gates will open at 6 PM.
