Hickory Crawdads News Release

Charleston, SC - For just the second time this season the high-powered Hickory Crawdads bats were held silent, as the 'Dads were shutout Sunday night in a 3-0 loss to the Charleston RiverDogs at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park.

The Crawdads produced their fair share of hits in the contest with the RiverDogs only outhitting them 8-7, but the 'Dads went 0-8 with runners in scoring position while leaving 11 total men on base, eight in scoring position. The lack of offense squandered the solid pitching by Hickory hurlers Collin Wiles, Kevin Matthews, and Yohander Mendez, with the trio holding the 'Dogs to three runs on eight hits, six singles, and eight strikeouts.

Charleston wasted little time in the game by jumping on Wiles and the 'Dads for a run in the first inning. Wiles entered the game having not allowed a run all season over 16 innings pitched, but the 'Dogs put together two singles and a hit-by-pitch to load the bases before Connor Spencer drew an RBI walk to put the 'Dogs up 1-0.

Wiles settled down following the 1st and retired nine of the next 10 batters he faced, but the RiverDogs were able to scratch across a tally in the 5th and another in the 6th to push their lead to 3-0. The Crawdads offense threatened to score in every frame from the 5th inning on, but the 'Dads left runners at second and third base in the 5th, stranded the bases loaded in the 6th, left a man on third in the 7th, two more in scoring position in the 8th, and finally left one more runner at second base in the 9th to end the game.

Wiles (3-1) was handed his first loss of the season for Hickory after allowing three runs on six hits, two walks, and a season-high five strikeouts over 5.1 innings pitched. Charleston starter Jordan Montgomery (3-1) earned the win by shutting the 'Dads out over six innings on four hits, four walks, and three Ks. RiverDogs reliever Joe Harvey (5) earned the save by recording the final four outs of the game.

Isiah Kiner-Falefa led the Hickory offense going 2-4 with a double, while Jose Trevino also had a multi-hit game finishing 2-4.

The Crawdads (16-7) will try to salvage a series split with the RiverDogs (15-9) in the series finale Monday night, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 pm.
