Hagerstown Suns News Release

HAGERSTOWN, MD - The Hagerstown Suns (10-13) coughed up two different two-run leads on Sunday afternoon, as the Greenville Drive (14-10) scored at least one run in each of the final seven innings to win comfortably by a final of 14-4. The 14 runs are the most the Suns have given up to an opponent this season.

Down 4-3 entering the sixth, Greenville was able to take the lead for good with a two-run frame. Shortstop Javier Guerra led off with a double, and CF Joseph Monge followed with a bunt single. Suns Catcher Matt Reistetter tried to throw Monge out at first and his throw sailed wide of first, allowing Guerra to score to tie the game. Monge went to second on the throwing error, and moved to third on a groundout. He scored from third when Derek Miller hit a groundball single up the middle to make it 5-4.

The game then opened up the next inning when Greenville wound up sending 10 men to the plate. The Drive came away with four runs in the frame, three of which were pushed home because of bases loaded walks. Suns pitching wound up issuing five walks in the inning and two wild pitches.

Greenville had another four-run inning in the ninth to really put the game to bed. This time it was a grand slam by 3B Rafael Devers which did the damage. Devers hit a solo homerun in his previous at-bat in the eighth and finished the game with five hits, including four for extra bases. The Drive finished with 18 hits in the game, including seven doubles and three homers, all of which are season-highs for an opponent against the Suns this year.

Hagerstown's initial two-run lead came in the first inning. The Suns loaded the bases with no one out, and then 1B Jose Marmolejos came through with a ground ball single to right to put the Suns up 1-0 and keep the bases loaded. The second run in the inning came home when the next batter, DH Grant DeBruin, grounded into a double play.

The Suns again took a two-run lead in the fourth. With the game tied at 2-2, a runner at second, and one out, 2B Osvaldo Abreu smacked a double to left field. That gave Hagerstown a 3-2 advantage. Abreu wound up heading to third due to a throwing error on a pickoff attempt, and he scored from third on a groundout to second.

Following that fourth inning RHP Chandler Shepherd (3-0) entered the game for Greenville and tossed three shutout innings to secure his third win of the year. He gave up just one hit while striking out two. RHP Andrew Cooper (0-2) suffered the loss for Hagerstown. He threw two innings in relief, allowing four earned runs on six hits while striking out one.

These teams will conclude their four-game series at Municipal Stadium on Monday May 4. The Suns will send LHP Connor Bach (0-0) to the mound for his fifth start of the season. He will square off against LHP Jalen Beeks (1-0) for Greenville. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05pm.
