Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Traverse City Beach Bums recorded a season-high 14 hits on Tuesday night, but the River City Rascals countered with 16 of their own to defeat the Beach Bums 12-11 to open a three-game series at Wuerfel Park.

Josh Ludy got the scoring started for the Rascals with a solo homer in the top of the first, but the Beach Bums answered back with a two-run blast from Yazy Arbelo in the bottom half of the frame to take a 2-1 lead.

TC extended the lead to 4-1 in the second on a Greg Harisis RBI double and Jeff DeBlieux sacrifice fly. River City came right back in the top of the third with a pair of runs to trim the deficit to 4-3 against Traverse City starter Rusty Shellhorn. The Beach Bums southpaw got more run support in the bottom of the third as TC scored three runs on a Rob Benedict RBI single, Kevin Taylor sacrifice fly and a wild pitch to open up a 7-3 advantage.

However, the Rascals offense blew up over the next two innings, plating nine runs. With three runs already home in the fourth, Taylor Ard tied the game at 7 with a solo shot off reliever Ryan Brasser. An inning later, River City took the lead when Brasser (0-2) uncorked a wild pitch enabling Evan Crawford to score. Eric Williams, Ludy, and Zach Komatani accounted for RBi's in the fifth before Ludy scored on a wild pitch from Cameron Giannini to make it 12-7.

The Beach Bums didn't go down without a fight, though, loading the bases on three walks in the last of the fifth. DeBlieux drove home two with a single up the middle and Jovan Rosa followed with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 12-10.

That's the way it stood until the last of the ninth inning when DeBlieux again drove home a run with a single to right to make it 12-11. The Beach Bums outfielder extended his hitting streak to seven games by going 2-for-4 with four RBI. With two in scoring position and two outs, River City closer Gabirel Shaw forced Rosa to pop out to right to end the game, picking up his 10th save.

Chandler Jagodzinski (2-0) earned the win for the Rascals by authoring 1.1 scoreless innings in relief of starter Trey Lambert, who gave up seven runs (six earned) in just 2.2 innings.

Shellhorn lasted 3.1 innings for the Beach Bums, allowing six runs on eight hits. Brasser took the loss by yielding four runs on five hits in an inning of relief.

In addition to DeBlieux, five other Beach Bums had multi-hit efforts: Harisis (2-5, 2 R, RBI), Arbelo (2-4, R, 2 RBI), Josh Miller (2-5, R), Sean Gusrang (2-4, R), and Benedict (2-4, 3 R, RBI).

Traverse City and River City battle again on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. Alex Phillips (0-3, 3.72) will get the ball for the Beach Bums against the Rascals' Ben Bracewell (0-0, 6.75). Fans unable to make the game can listen to the broadcast starting at 6:45 p.m. on Classic Rock the Bear 98.1/107.1 and classicrockthebear.com.
