Normal CornBelters News Release
Crestwood, Ill. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, pounded out nine runs in the third inning on the way to their fifth straight victory, a 10-2 triumph over the Windy City ThunderBolts on Wednesday night at Standard Bank Stadium. The second game of the doubleheader was suspended in the second inning with the ThunderBolts leading 1-0 and will be resumed at 4:05 p.m. Thursday before the regularly scheduled game.
The CornBelters tallied first with their biggest inning of the season, beginning the third-inning rally on nine straight one-out singles off ThunderBolts starter Travis Tingle, knocking him out of the game with the guests leading 7-0. The Belters continued the inning by batting 15 men with a total of 11 hits for a 9-0 lead on RBIs from Mike Schwartz, Sam Judah, Aaron Dudley and Richard Lucas plus a two-run double from Jhiomar Veras.
The ThunderBolts broke through in the fourth inning when Jon Mestas walked and was doubled home by Davidson Peguero. The Bolts added a run in the sixth when Kyle Robinson led off with a single and eventually scored on a ground out by Peguero to cut the margin to 10-2.
Corey MacDonald (3-1) won his second straight start with a six-inning performance that included four hits, three walks and three strikeouts. Tingle (4-2) took the loss.
In the nightcap, the ThunderBolts scored in the first frame as Evan Button led off with an infield single, was sacrificed to second and moved home on two groundouts with the RBI going to Kyle Robinson. A light rain continued to fall, causing umpires to suspend the second game until 4:05 p.m. Thursday. In the nightcap, the Belters send Mike Devine (1-4, 4.83 ERA) to the mound while the Bolts counter with Daniel Cropper (2-5, 6.07) in a match-up of right-handers. The CornBelters then continue the road trip in Chicagoland with a weekend visit to Schaumburg before returning home for four games against the Joliet Slammers next week with a 6 p.m. Tuesday doubleheader followed by 7 p.m. games on Wednesday and Thursday.
